Prisoners who attempt or carry out suicide are much more likely than other prisoners to have several factors in their lives that are known to be associated with increased vulnerability to suicide . They are more likely to be suffering from a mental ill health, especially depression and/or anxiety, psychosis and personality disorder. They are also more likely to have a severe lack of social support (with few or no close friends and family members still in contact with them). In addition, they are more likely to have history of adverse life events, both recently (for example, bereavement or the ending of a relationship) and over the course of their lifetime (particularly violence and sexual abuse).
