    chocolate/ sweets and baggage

i want to put tins of sweets in my cargo luggage,

the large tins you get around xmas, you know like, cadbury roses, quality street and celebrations,

2 of these are metal tins rather than the plastic ones you get now,

i was wondering if the tins (being metal) will be detected as something suspicious and cause them to want to inspect my suitcase ?

anyone have any thoughts on this?

i could re package the sweets but don't really want to

cant see a problem with that, make sure they are in your cases , they will be scanned and they will see what they are, just make sure you check them before you give them as presents, the guards may have took all the toffee pennies out

Stewart ... did you know that large tins of each of these are currently on sale at £4 and £5 respectively, in Tesco?

I've taken those tins over to both Lebanon and Philippines before, and never any trouble
Only thing I'd bear in mind, is that UK chocolate (Being amongst the best in the world, not like that Belgian or other continental crap) is designed for cool climates and won't cope well at all if it goes to phils. I found this out after taking a load of choc with me when I went over in September, and it turned to mush.

ps, let them take the toffee pennies, they are disgusting! That's why small shopkeepers never let you put Quality Street in the pick and mix, because they knew they would be left with those cheap nasty toffees hardly anyone liked

im assuming if in my suitcase while flying should be ok i would imagine the cargo hold will be cold at altitude, im thinking as soon as possible after arriving to put in refridgerator, while in manila, for other travel maybe something like a cold bag you get to keep frozen food from thawing untill you get it home, it wont be a perfect solution but may help delay reduce any melting

Yep, I took a heap over, including a Thornton's chocolate racing car for my wife's nephew. I didn't spend long outside in the sun though - air conditioned transport and air conditioned hotel, once I arrived in Manila. All arrived perfectly.

What's your itinerary once you get to Manila?

The racing car went in my hand luggage and the rest went into aircraft cargo. I also bought several packs of Herscheys Kisses ( a favourite of the wife's) in the duty free en route.

My choccies survived ok last trip (in hand-baggage).

It is true that export confectionery is made to a slightly different recipe and with special packaging when sent to hot countries, but normal chocolate should be ok as long as it's not allowed to get too warm.

You will be fine stewart dont worry. It depends which side of the bed the one who scans your luggage gets out of. They might ask for a look. My luggage has been checked in the past I had some shower gel in my case.. But you have nothing to hide you will be ok.

They probably wouldn't allow it on the plane cos of the chemicals used...but easy enough (and cheap) to buy in the Phils.

i was thinking along the lines of a shopping bag you can get from freezer shops to carry home frozen goods, its a plastic, like a bubble wrap lining, no chemicals, just delays thawing, so in theory should insulate the contents from external heat

Meant I was "bristling" mad at the prospect of having to resort to using these silly wee rectangular tablets of soap provided by our holiday hotel.

... wouldn't have been so bad - were it not for the fact that the confiscated item had ALREADY cost me a fair few quid not all that long before setting (or, perhaps more appropriately in the circumstances, jetting ) off!
