A Filipino worker who was badly burned in an explosion on a oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico last week has died from his injuries.

His death brings to three, the toll from the blast off the coast of Louisiana eight days ago. All three who died were Filipinos.

Welder, Avelino Tajonera, 49, died a few hours after his wife and three children arrived at a Texas hospital to see him.

"The Filipino nation joins his family in grieving over their loss," Philippines Ambassador, Jose Cuisia Jr., said in a statement.

The body of Ellroy Corporal, 42, has been recovered and will be repatriated next week.

Rescue workers were unable to find Jerome Malagapo, 28, who was lost at sea.

Nine of the 22 workers doing maintenance work on the non-producing platform were Filipinos working for a sub-contractor.

I just dont get why there isn't a proper system for hooking on whilst climbing at that height, seems like unecessary danger.

I used to free climb up 150ft regularly, to the top of the rig I worked on. Great view on a nice day. I know, 150ft is nothing in comparison, but you still die if you hit the deck from that height.

Most rigs have "backscratchers" on their ladders now though, that prevent you from falling outwards and give a little support if you want to pause for a bit.

You will notice that they do have a safety line, but as the guy says it is more tiring to use it.

A guy I worked with climbed for fun in the Alps, so thought nothing of climbing the rig structure itself, for fun. Whereas I took the ladder provided.

Many of these guys like the one that you see in the film are climbers anyway, so love it.

Many rigs employ qualified abseilers for work up in the derrick structure.
