I'm a Filipina new in York

My family arrived in York just over a week ago. Now that the snow fun is over, I thought I'd make an effort to find other Filipinos in the area. Apparently, there are about 6,000 Filipinos around, so where are you guys? I've been hanging around the town centre and the rowntree park all this time, I couldn't find a single one of you??!!! Hope to meet you, especially those in the FCY (Filipino Community in York).

To introduce myself, I'm a mother to an 8 y.o. boy and a 4 y.o. girl. We just recently moved back to England after 7 long years with the intention to settle. We used to live in the southwest, but my sister-in-law offered us a temporary abode in her home until my husband and I find something worthwhile to do (read: good paying jobs). As of now, we are still considering if York is best for us (I love it so far) as we have certain needs that may not be addressed here. We're going to Kent next week to visit my father-in-law who has also offered his home to us and will check if life can be better there.

As of now, we live just a stone-throw away from the famed Rowntree Park (where Barrio Fiesta was held last year).

    Best regards,
    Lucille Taylor

Hi Lucille! Surely youll find new friends in there. Visited York last year, it was a sunday as far as I can remember and there were a market near the cathedral that time, seen a FILIPINO stall with filipina ladies in there as well hanging about selling cakes and sweets. Try to visit the market, not sure if they are there still but worth a try. Welcome to the forum!

Hi Lucille, and welcome to the forum...and to my home city of York.

If you're in Morrisons on Foss Islands Road some time, you may meet my relative Alma (also in her forties), who works there. I know she has contact with lots of other Filipinas here in the York area.

Seems like 'mikeinyork' didn't feel like replying to our welcoming posts on that thread he started.

One of the short vids I shot at the last Barrio Fiesta in York (2012)...

Nah ... appears he hasn't been on here since December 2010 - when he first introduced himself - but I do remember the bloke because, like Myrna, his wife, Dina had taught in the Philippines.

Superb video, Graham ... particular event happened to coincide with Doc Alan's 'Scarborough Weekend', as I recall! Thanks for sharing.

Yup, ANOTHER good one ... you've certainly been busy with the camcorder; several of your compilations there in the previous series, I notice.

I think only those(Barrio Fiesta) two are mine Arthur....and they are 'unlisted'...meaning only those with the link can view. I have one or two other ones on the pc that I haven't uploaded though. Maybe I should do that.

thanks. i've already seen this (and has already signed up), that's why I got to find out about the existence of FCY. however, nothing about meetups, nor headquarters, and the only way to contact them is via email. i thought maybe in this forum I will be able to really "meet" them

Yes, I am of course Lucille.

It must take courage to play in front of 500 people at the Grand Opera House in York, and compete against 10 other bands.

No, it's Roundhay Park in Leeds.

Rowntree Park is in York (named after Joseph Rowntree the confectionery manufacturer, who donated the land...along with many other facilities he provided in the city. ).

We used to have fantastic big open-air swimming pool there...probably the only public one in the North of England, until our stupid short-sighted council shut it down and filled it in.

I know you're joking, but if you weren't, Tesco offers a free eye test with no obligation to buy any of their specs at all. I have an appointment on Monday, hurrah. That should save me 20 quid.

Speaking of savings, as my husband and I still don't have any jobs (read: no income), I thought it wise to learn to cut hair to save on the pounds again. He and my son are both due for their monthly haircut, so I got on youtube and watched amateurs do their family's as well. Well, I'm proud to say I just did both of them just now and they are both 'appy with the result. So that's about another 20 quid of savings???

Nice to see people chatting here. I've been here in York for over a month, and I think loneliness is kicking in a bit. I had the chance to talk to the City Mayor yesterday and told me where to find the Filipinos (as I still haven't met a single one yet) and he said after the church service at 12 at St Wilfrid's. I'll have a go tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I'm open to being friends with non-Filipinos of course, but to be honest, when I listen to people talking around me (like at school, when I hear parents talking to one another in the morning and afternoon during drop off and pick up), I can barely understand them. I find myself asking them to repeat what they just said most of the time if they talk to me, and so jokes usually get "wasted" with me. I just thought it will be easier to chat with a fellow Filipino.

Have a good day everyone. Here in York, it's warm and sunny!

    Cheers,
    Lucille

Magandang hapon, Lucille ... I know exactly what you mean, albeit in MY case it's more to do with me growing increasingly hard of hearing - whether due to advancing age, I've no - but it can be frustrating trying to interpret what others are saying to me at times.

One of the great things about being a forum member, is that I feel it's much easier for me to communicate in the written (read: printed and/or typed) word.

Anyway, I'm waffling a bit. Here's wishing you the best of luck in your search for fellow kabayan.

A (friend of a friend) Filipina from York runs this facebook group.

    https://www.facebook.com/FilipinoBeatCancer/info

I know they have several York Filipina members and they run charity fundraising events in town, as well as socialising together...so might be worth contacting her. They're a friendly bunch.

(you'll find her contact details on the 'about' section on the fb page).

Good luck in finding some new friends here.

    Hi Lucille!

If you're going to Kent, if you live near a train station or commuting coach, from a lot of areas in Kent you can travel to London within 1 hour, so there's a lot of areas you could possibly work. Might be an idea to look on various job websites (Indeed, Simply hired, Total jobs, Monster etc) in areas that you are living/are thinking of living (such as Kent) + searching for recruitment agencies that deal with your type of experience and see if there are any vacancies that you have experience in/think you can do as some areas will have more vacancies available that you might be able to do. If after looking a bit in certain areas, if there doesn't seem to be much around, then maybe not worth thinking of moving to that area.

Thanks Graham. I just checked the FB site, they're running a race for life 5km in June, I thought I'll join that one. Just messaged the site owner. Maybe I'll get a reply.

Already went to Kent, and thought the area is not suitable for me and my family. Thanks for the advice though. My husband and I already made the decision to stay here in York. I feel safe here.

It's beautiful here in York in summer I must admit...and always plenty to do, without spending much money.
