    Balut

Ok....this may have been asked before, but.....as anyone here eaten Balut? And if so how did it taste?

I have foolishly said I would try Balut but it really freaks me out when I see photos or videos of it.

I am assuming the majority of Filipino people on this forum have eaten and like it. But what about all you non-Filipino's

I've had them a few times before. The thought of it and the appearance are much worse than actually eating it!

Balut sort of tastes like a cross between a boiled egg and chicken (which makes sense, I guess).

Just have a couple of beers and get it down you. It's not that bad and the Filipinos with no doubt have a great time watching you eat it!

It's fine, I think we have worse things on our menus in the UK, particularly in Yorkshire.

Tripe, Chitterlings, Faggots, Offal, Pigs Trotters, Black Pudding, Liver, Gizzards, tongue, crackling, testicles and haggis all feature in Yorkshire and are pretty nasty when you think about it.

Just try to not to think about it too much, and maybe add some hot sauce haha.

Bit like eating boiled egg shells with a some feathers thrown in. Not as bad as it looks.

    Supposed to be an aphrodisiac

The first person to eat this must have been at deaths door, which is where I would have to be too.

Actually, the taste is OK and although the texture is odd there's nothing notable to say.

The issue for me now is just knowing what's inside and having seen what's inside. My brain will not permit anymore.

Yeah! I have heard it is meant to be an aphrodisiac. But so is asparagus and I would much rather eat asparagus. Hehehe!

I watched some of my mahal's family eat balut last week close up and it didn't look very appetizing.

It tastes nice to be fair, but 4 hours after eating it I was tasting it again, as well as ejecting it from the back end! It made me pretty ill, but I'll do it again. I agreed to try it and was never going to back out of it, but when Ruby, her brother, sister in law and I were about to tuck in, I watched as her brother started to peel and eat his, showing me how to do it. Ruby was peeling hers and was about to eat it when I grabbed it, as I knew I needed to do it then, rather than wait and look at my own. So in two mouthfuls I ate it, without looking at it at all.

As I said though it tasted nice, and defo worth trying, but be warned you may re-taste it :P
