It didn't take long for the handwringers to show themselves

Commenting on reports that three men were hanged in Kuwait, Foreign Office Minister Mark Simmonds said:

I am deeply concerned at the hanging of three prisoners in Kuwait, the first executions in the country since 2007. The UK opposes all use of the death penalty as a matter of principle. We encourage the Kuwaiti authorities to follow the current trend in international practice and impose a moratorium on the use of the death penalty. We also urge Kuwait to consider acceding to the 2nd Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which is aimed at the abolition of the death penalty.

Simmonds should hang his head in shame - I'd expect these sort of sentiments from a Lib Dem but certainly not a Tory. He'll be losing the support of some of his electorate
