really surprises me. Why?

Because, MOST police and prison officers I've known in my time were, invariably, diehard true blue, Tory voters ... and, in turn, Thatcher's Governments made it their business to ensure these "guardians of the law" were suitably rewarded in terms of wages and pension provisions.

I just re-read the Mail article - he looks like a typical bloated time serving copper - the article states he earns "£45,000 in a back office role". Also he will retain his pension.

The sooner Mrs May imposes annual fitness tests for the Police and sacks fat idle lumps the better.

His tweets were vile, I would have hoped a man of his age and service would never make comments like that, most likely done his 30years service and been rehired in a cushy job.
Your right about checking fitness, should also include a psychiatric check.
