If you've time, also pop across to the York Castle Museum (next to Cliffords Tower, off Tower Street).

I'm sure we paid when we last went two or three years ago, but we absolutely loved it. We find York with a trip to the Railway Museum, and a quick wander around the city is a full day.

Last time we went back end of last year it was free. Mind you we paid for York Minster.
(and I paid dearly for the shopping )
