Pot Bellied Pigs marauding into town!
    By Dennis Dungao

THE word is definitely out... this is what sports and non-sports enthusiasts in AngelesCity have been anticipating, The 3rd Fat Boy's 10's 2006 International Rugby.

Characterized by slapstick and good-humored playing style, the Pot Bellied Pigs, the prime movers of The 3rd Fat Boy's 10's 2006 International Rugby, are to Asian Rugby, what the Harlem Globetrotter's are to American Basketball... but perhaps without their physique, agility and skill levels.

The Pot Bellies were originally formed in 1997 with their first tour of Manila in the same year. The idea was to become a touring rugby team with a mission... "Put the PINK back into rugby." This first tour was the "love child" of a drunken meeting of minds between "Freddie the Clock" and "Haughty the Amah- slayer." The touring squad was composed entirely of social (drunkard) players sourced out from Hong Kong's various clubs. The inaugural game was against the Manila Nomads. Since inception, the Pot Bellied Pig's have gone from strength to strength with a formal club structure established in 2001. The Pot Bellied Pigs are now predominantly a touring side, which draws on like-minded rugby players from clubs all over Asia and beyond who adhere to the true amateur spirit of the game. The Pot Bellied Pigs attend rugby tournaments held in many cities in Asia, including, Manila, Jakarta, Phuket, Bangkok, Macau, Bali, Pattaya, Seoul, Phnom Penh, and Hat Yai.

The Pot Bellied Pig's are tournament favorites throughout
Asia, resplendent in their tours which is different from every tour, with uniforms always a combination of the club's color pink, lime green, yellow and blue. The recent award of the most "Social" team at the 2004 Manila 10's illustrates the regard in which the rugby community holds the Pigs. Today the Pot Bellied Pig's have developed into an Asian touring club. The club has members living in all the far - flung corners of the world, from the Ukraine to Texas and from the OrkneyIsland to Tasmania. These absent Pigs do their best to attend at least one tour a year. The Pot Bellied Pig's have recently begun to win a few games on a regular basis reaching the semi final of the Plate competition in the Manila 10's in 2003, winning the Plate Competition in the Jakarta 10's 2002, and in 2004 winning the ball at the Manila 10's and being runners - up in the bowl at the Phuket 10's.

The pinnacle of The Pot-bellied Pigs' potted history is to hold its very own “FAT BOY'S 10'S” tournament in
Angeles City, Philippines annually. This is a charity event with the two nominated charities being the Bahay Bata Orphanage, a Rotary for street kids in AngelesCity, and the Philippine Rugby Football Union Development Fund.

The 3rd Fat Boy's 10's 2006 International Rugby is an eclectic mix of teams- an international one at that, as the NOMADS RFC, ALABANG EAGLE'S, HKFC LUVANDALS, THE OLD BILL, MAKATI WOLVES, PJ PACKERS, SEOUL BARBARIANS (KOREA), MYSTERIOUS HOUND DOGS, BANGKOK BANGERS, and PHILIPPINE WARRIOR (MARINE ACADEMY OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC) were expected to compete.

The Angeles City Alliance, a unique group of Bars and Restaurant working together to bring the
AngelesCity tourism at its the best in dining and after dinner partying, led by Subdelicious Restaurant, do welcome the FAT BOY'S 10. They were known to host this comical group every time they're in town. Come and join the Fat Boy's weigh-in on the 2nd floor at SubDelicious on AUGUST 25TH from 7 p.m. till late.

The success of the Pot-bellied Pigs' 2nd FAT BOY'S 10'S 2006 INTERNATIONAL RUGBY last year was so tremendous that this year there is an increase from 10 teams to 16 teams. Watch the fun and learn the art of the FAT BOY'S style of sport. Everybody is welcome, as entrance is FREE!!!! The Kick-off and fun begins on
August 26, 2006 from 8am until 6pm; see you all at the Challenger Field, Clark Special Economic Zone.

NOTE THE FB 10’s is about helping the ongoing expences of the BAHAY BATA CENTRE check them out:

Fat Boys set to roll once more

Fun and funding will once again be the themes when the Pot Bellied Pigs stage the “Third Inaugural, International, Invitational Fat Boys TENS III” at Clarke Airbase in Angeles City, the Philippines, on August 26.

As in previous years, money raised will go towards the Bahay Bata Centre for Street Children in Angeles City and the Philippines Rugby Union Development Fund.

“The Centre for Street Children was opened by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2001 but it requires constant funding to keep it afloat,” says Pigs club secretary Mike Hampton.

“We need to keep reminding ourselves that children are our future and that it is vitally important to help these underprivileged and neglected youngsters who cry out for a little help.”

The Philippines Rugby Union, meanwhile, uses its share of the proceeds to spread rugby among the Filipino community – an initiative that has produced excellent results in recent years.

Last year’s Fat Boys Tens – featuring teams from the Philippines and overseas – raised $HK150,000 for the twin causes.

Pigs chairman Alun Grassick and corporate liaison officer Anson Bailey paid a special visit to the Bahay Bata Centre in December to present a cheque. Says Bailey: “We were treated to a special dance and singing performance by the children and, more importantly, we saw so many happy, smiling little faces.”

Almost all team places are taken for this year’s Fat Boys Tens – SPONSORED BY THE LAW FIRM Tanner De Witt and Clariant (China Ltd) – so Bailey’s advice is: “Act now!” In addition, he is happy to accept individual or company donations.

For more information, contact Anson Bailey on 93825797 or visit www.potbellies.org

    From – “Headroom

Oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh Yeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - good win for the Nomads at the Fat Boy 10's at the weekend - champs last year and again this year.

Pool games were relatively easy but then came up against the Alabang Eagles - the old arch rivals in the Semi's. Was a hard game but won it 2 tries to nil.

The final was a really tough game against the host team - the Pot Belly Heavies. They had some really good players on the team and most were a lot larger than Nomads. Nomads had the fitness though and managed to score a single try with about 2 minutes to go in the final.

Great tournament and thanks to the Pot Belly Pigs for organising such a good day - it is getting bigger and better every year. This year the team numbers were up from 10 to 16 and the quality of the teams has improved as well.

No doubt that the biggest winners of all though are the Bahay Bata Kids and the PRFU which split the proceeds of the weekend.

Big thanks to the Piggies for that!!

PRFU squad for Sri Lanka Rugby 7s Sep 15-17 2006

Just got this message from Headroom on the Manila tonight forum site:http://manilatonight.com/index.php?showforum=193

Cappelan - looks like the line up will be as follows:

    1.Carlito Abono (Filipino)
    2. Jasper Ching(Filipino)
    3. Paulin Padhayag (Filipino)
    4. Max Stewart (Australian)
    5. Carlos Reporas (Filipino)
    6. Bruno Vergnes (French)
    7. Noel Flowers (Filipino/Australian)
    8. Jerry Echter (Dutch)
    9. Jerry Branzuela (Filipino/South African)
    10. Jason Foster(Filipino)
    11. Rey Gigataras(Filipino/Australian)
    12. Damien Allison(English)

    13. Physio: Olive R. Rallanka (Filipino)

Most of the expat players eligible to play were either unavailable or injured following the FB 10's.

The Philippines is the lowest ranked team competing and the pool games are against Khyzakstan and Chinese Taipei.

Although there was some concern about sending such an inexperienced squad to play, my thoughts are that it will be good for the young Filipinos to go and get some experience on the International Stage - the next step for Rugby in the Philippines.

As the rank outsiders and underdogs there is absolutely nothing to lose.

IT IS GREAT TO SEE A MAJORITY PINOY TEAM - THEY WILL LEARN A LOT FROM THIS EXPERIENCE. TAIWAN world ranking 41 Asian 5 & KAZHAKSTAN world ranking 49 Asian 8. PHILIPPINES world ranking 106 Asian 15 LITTLE DAVID v GOLIATH - BRING IT ON

From a fellow Philippine Rugby poster on another forum site:

    http://manilatonight.com/index.php?showtopic=23734&st=120

The other thing that needs to be remembered here is that this was also a qualifying tournament for next year's 7's World Cup.

The majority of the teams were professional - paid to play with lots of resources and money and training as a unit on a full time basis.

The Philippines team was thrown together at the last minute when a position at the tournament became available - the team had a total of 2 training sessions together.

Add this that the team lacked the experience of the the other countries and you get a better perspective of the challenge that the team faced as a bunch of amateurs.

They didn't give in though, played hard and everyone should be proud of them.

Interview: Gary Ella (retired Australian Rugby Wallaby) – Visit to Philippines

Go to www.prfu.com website. I found his observation of the development of Rugby amongst locals in the Philippines interesting especially in its capacity to provide participants with employment outside Rugby.

BTW clarification the team that won the Manila 7s (South East Asian Games Rugby 7s site sport) was a Malaysian based team from the state of Sabah dominated by Fijians. AND THE PHILIPPINES WON THE INTERNATIONAL COMPONENT OF THE TOURNAMENT BEATING INDONESIA 32-5.

Sinulog rugby tilt attracts Malaysian team

SIX teams will battle it out for the debut staging of the Rugby Football Club Cebu City-organized Sinulog 10s Rugby Festival today at the Camp Lapu-Lapu Field in Lahug.

The country’s top-ranked teams, including a foreign contender from Malaysia, dispute for the Dragon Cup, the top honors bequeathed to the champion team.

With the homecourt edge, Cebu Dragons Rugby Club will field two teams that will defend its turf as they confront the visiting Alabang Eagles, Nomads, Maritime Academy Warriors and the Malaysian squad—RSC Dalmatians—which came all the way from Selangor.

    Top 2 teams

Alabang and Nomads are the country’s top two teams. The two Cebu squads, on the other hand, rank third and fourth respectively, in the national level.

Tru to its title, the 10s tournament adopts a 10-a-side format with 10 playing minutes given for each half. Teams play in a round robin to determine the team that will play in the final round.

Later in the day, regional pride is put at stake the best from Luzon challenge the best from Visayas in the battle for supremacy. (MCB)

    Cebu teams wiped out
By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Staff Reporter

CEBU teams were wiped out in the First Sinulog 10s Rugby Festival held last weekend at the Camp Lapu-Lapu Field in Lahug, Cebu City.

The Cebu Dragons Rugby Club fielded in two teams in the one-day tournament, but its best finishes are runners up diadems in two events.

The Cebu Black Dragons finished second in the Dragon’s Tail event, as they were completely overshadowed by the MAAP Warriors, 4-0 in the championship round.

    Surviving a scare

In the Dragon’s Cup competition, Alabang Eagles, the country’s top seeded rugby team, survived a scare against fellow Manila team, Nomads Sports Club, to capture the title in this class.

The Eagles needed extra time before thwarting Nomads, 4-2.

The Eagles and Nomads forced each other to a 2-all deadlock in regulation period to extend the game. In overtime, the Eagles went on to score two points to take the winning trophy.

    Too much for local team

Foreign team Royal Selangor Dalmatians did better than the home team as it will go home with a trophy in tow after copping the Dragon’s Bowl title.

The Malaysians proved to be too much for the home team as it thrashed the other Cebu Team, the Cebu White Dragons, 8-1, for the title.

With the successful debut of the competition, the organizers promised to have a sequel in next year’s Sinulog.

The Cebu Dragons will have a few months rest before embarking once more on another bid as they try to redeem themselves in another competition in March in Metro Manila before coming back home for another national tournament here in Cebu.

    Manila 10s Rugby, March 23-25
Two dozen rugby teams and their supporters converge on Manila soon for the 2007 edition of the Manila 10s International Rugby Festival. The combination of serious 10-a-side rugby in a party atmosphere happens over the weekend of March 23-25 at the Nomad Sports Club in suburban Merville Park, Paranaque City.
There is a big pre-tournament lunch organized by the Australian-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel on the Manila bayside on March 23, preliminary matches on March 24 and the morning of March 25, with the cup, plate and bowl finals on the afternoon of March 25. The in-between social schedule culminates in a closing dinner and party on the Nomads club pitch on the evening of March 25. Entrance to the club for matches is free. Rugby fever hits Manila
    05/26/2007

France will host the 6th edition of the 6th Rugby World Cup on Sept. 7 to Oct. 20, the first time a non-English speaking country will host the event.

Twenty nations from five continents will be competing in 10 French cities where the 1998 Fifa World Cup was also held. These are: Bordeaux, Lens, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Paris, Saint-Denis, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse.

The tournament is expected to draw 2.5 million spectators and watched by four billion television viewers.

In Manila, rugby fever kicks off today as French Ambassador Gerard Chesnel leads the festivities at 2 p.m. at the European International School Stadium. Official shirts for the 2007 Rugby World Cup will be presented while demonstration matches of Touch Rugby by students and the women’s national team are also scheduled.

Rendezvouz 2007, a project which aims to gather 80 young rugby players from local schools outside France will also be launched. They will meet up with other athletes in France for two weeks.

Angeles City Rugby 10’s Charity fundraiser & Party, September 1

The annual Fat Boys 10s rugby festival is coming up again, bringing a contingent of rugby enthusiasts from Hong Kong’s Pot Bellied Pigs Rugby Football Club to the Philippines to meet their over-sized local counterparts in Angeles City for a weekend of rugby and partying for charity.

The actual game happens on September 1 at the Challenger Stadium at Clark. On the other days and evenings over the weekend, there are various Fat Boys 10s party events around Angeles which raise money for charity and rugby development, shared between the Angeles Bahay Bata Center – an orphanage run by the local Rotary club - and the Philippines Rugby Football Union’s development fund.

Last year, the Fat Boys 10s raised over US$25,000; this year the target is $32,000. Team base hotel is again the Maharajah; the golf tournament is at the Mimosa Golf Club, Bar HQ is Insomnia; restaurant of choice is Sub-Delicious for the 1,000 pesos per head charity dinner and auction.

I just caught this thread. That top clip - the little kid at the end? I think we've found the new Shane Williams, though he's a bit tall

Does anyone know if the Volcanoes shirt can be purchased anywhere? It could be a good side-money earner for the PRFU.
