The hospitals usually Offer women two scans. The first one is on your 8-14 weeks pregnancy which is the dating scan. Then the second scan is called anomaly scan which takes place from18-21 weeks. In this country, as soon as you knew that you are pregnant, you have to book an appointment to your gp, then they will tak to the midwife to see if there are any available appointment for you. You can't compare the set up here and in the Philippines wherein you see the doctor straight away and will check any problems throughout your pregnancy. Here, the midwife is the one who looks after the pregnant women (known as midwife led care) unless they will see any complications on your pregnancy then they will refer you to the Medical team.
On your first day, the midwife will ask you about your family medical history. Then they will take some bloods. Just make sure that you will get all the information you want to know, and don't hesitate to ask them if you are in doubt or anything that comes to your mind. They will be happy to help you. Then after that the midwife will book you an appointment for your first scan and will receive a letter through post.
After your first scan, they will take your height and weight(if not done by the midwife in the GP surgery), test your urine. The midwife will ask you some questions regarding your health then will tell you the result of the blood tests done when you were with your midwife in the gp surgery. Then they will ask if you want to be test if your baby will have chances of having Down's Syndrome. All of my children were given this test. So there's no harm if you say yes, anyway it's free. I know this things because I'm pregnant again for the third time.
It doesn't matter if the midwife will look after you. The midwife are well respected and they are like doctors not like in the Philippines wherein the midwife are just for those people who can't afford to pay the doctor's fee. I know this things happens in the Philippines way back when I will still training in some public hospitals.
Congratulations to both of you. Good luck.![]()
