Perhaps this is a silly question, but on the online visa application form at the end it asks for the applicant's signature and provides a box to type something in.

Should this be left blank and signed with pen once it is printed?

If anyone knows, please let me know!

Update:

I think I've answered this myself. It turns out that you need to write something in that final box else you can not proceed; I simply put my wife's full name. I can see on the final application form to be printed, there is space for a signature anyway.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone else who fills out the form.
