documents for fiancee visa

Hi everyone.

I discovered this forum just recently. Very informative

I am a farmer living in Northern Ireland and my fiancee is a wonderful filipina woman who lives in Davao. We are intending that she applies for the visa next April and we are getting together all the paperwork that we think we need.

I have 2 questions at the moment and I would be grateful for any help that anyone could give.

1. Is there such a thing in the U.K as a "certficate of no impediment" which shows that I am not married? I have never heard of such a document but have read in other sites that it is needed :unsure:

2 It says on the UK visa site to have your passport certified by a public notary. Where do I find this person to sign the photocopy of my passport? What is a public notary? :unsure:

Sorry if my questions seem basic but I have no real idea about the immigration process. It was a surprise to me to fall in love with a filipina woman , but a real joy too and I just hope to spend the rest of my life with her. Hopefully we can go through the visa application process without too many hiccups.

I'm relatively new to all this too, but after I had great help from all of those on this forum, I think it only fair that I help you.

Yes, a certificate of no impediment exists and is required.

Passport certification is done by a lawyer/solicitor.... one of the two.

I wonder if you know about ''proof of relationship'' .... If you don't, then you will soon discover this on the site i'm going to paste in next message for you.

I'm just going to get you the link for a site written by one of the moderators here in this forum that you will find to be of immense help.
It helped me a great deal.

I'm currently in Davao visiting my loved one... though i leave on the 25th Nov.

If you come here and want a cheap hotel, I suggest the BS Inn hotel... 400 pesos a night. Very basic and simple, all you need really.

Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage issued in the UK

A CNI can be issued by your district registrar in the UK. A notice of marriage will have to be displayed for 21 clear days before the registrar will issue a CNI. Please contact your local registry office for more details.
Once issued, the CNI should be legalised at the Legalisation Office of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The address is:

If you have been married before, then your divorce certificate (Decree Absolute) or death certificate of a former spouse should also be legalised by the Legalisation Office in the UK.

Never heard of anyone else needing this, but things change so fast.


As for the passport, just take it to a solicitors, if he's going to charge a lot, go to another one. Ours was done for free, if they do that, take them in a box of biscuits, it'll mean they do it for free for the next person

My wife needed to get our passports notarised. Our regular solicitors nose picking teenage geek secretary told her to take it to another solicitors, who promptly told her if was 50 quid a go for his signatures.

I told her to go back to our original solicitors and ask again, which she did do. Another secretary was there that day, and she calledan internal line, popped upstairs, got it photocopied, got it signed, and gave it back, in five minutes, and for free. B)

I found Davao to be a bit hectic with the traffic ( no rules at all for any vehicle apparently , just drive where you like ) and the pollution was fairly bad, although i have heard it is ten times worse in Manila.

As for hotels , I stayed in the Apo View Hotel. It works out great value if you get your filipina girlfriend/fiancee/wife to apply for the membership. It gives you a free upgrade on your room and also 3 free nights. There is also a swimming pool , nightclub and casino in the hotel. And I can recommend Jack's Ridge as a nice restaurant with views over the city.

But the best part of my trip there was the people who were all so nice to me. It will be a bit of a shock to my fiancee when she meets the people of the U.K. I think that shop assistants from here should be sent to the Phils to learn what the word "polite" means.

And yes, you're right...there does seem to be a lot of ''drive where you likies'' here..and pollution is pretty bad.

If i was doing MOT's in this part of the world, i would instantly condemn at least three quarters of the vehicles on the road...

I seriously can't believe how they drive at night with no lights, or get roun corners with buckled wheels and cream crackered UJ's or missing bottom ball joints etc etc etc.

I've even seen a car using blue light bulbs, front and rear... for side lights, dip beam and tail/brake lights....

Totaly unreal.... but hey,....who cares...hehehehe

this morning i witnessed a slight it of 'corner cutting'... ie, totaly forgetting to go around waiting traffic on the left to turn left but instead turn left before the traffic and head towards oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road before getting into proper lane on right hand side.... Talk about gob smacked...i just stood there and laughed.

How much was the Apo? Maybe i'll give that a shot next time... depending.

I have to agre that the sales staff are more polite, but I really do wish they would stop following m around the store while i browse... that really gets on my nerves... and then they try to sell me the priciest stuff.... I think trying to learn how to say ''go away'' in their language would be a tad rude, but if they insist on looking over my shoulder at every move i make then they might just get it...

well, i'm here for just another two days and will soon b returning to Hong Kong...

It costs 5000 php for 1 year's membership , so get your gf to get it as she can use the discounts and go to the swimming pool for free. It is considered a 4 * hotel, so not for people who prefer cheap and cheerful.
