    New, my introduction

Hello, my name is Maurice. I visited the Philippines in April this year for the first, and almost certainly the last, time. I met some really fine people there, and I became godfather to a baby girl, so I intend to stay in touch and to fulfil my duties. I also 'know' a couple of Philippine people on Facebook. I found this site while looking for the best way to get some DVDs to Cebu city.

Hello Maurice, welcome to the Filipino UK forum

Glad to see you've signed-up and posted.

May I ask what took you all the way to the Philippines last April ? and whereabouts in those 7,107 islands did you stay?

    Welcome....

Why "probably the first & almost certainly the last time" in Cebu? Given a chance I'd be off on the next plane....

's what I'd like to ask also ... ... particularly in view of the special connections you made (being a godfather, for example) while across there.

... can't help in that respect, I'm afraid. But I'm sure plenty others here can.

hi and welcome, it may be cheaper to send the cash over so they can buy the dvd there, or if there are loads then may be cheaper to get a balikabian box,

I'm really not sure that many DVD's sourced here are actually 'playable' on Phils DVD players without some region code jiggery-pokery

Until recently most players were locked to a specific region.
I do know that some brands are now offering a multi-region function or even some are region free.

Not sure how these players handle the PAL/NTSC conversion aspect though.

Somebody here will know I'm sure

    Hi.

    Just got back from Cebu.

There are tons of places there to buy DVDs. Especially the local markets. Very cheap.

Wonder why its your last visit ? I cant wait to go back.....

    They are illegal

Think of all the money those filipino actors are losing. Its okay though as they usually move into a much more lucrative profession

If you plan to buy DVD's in the street or market do not buy one that has just been released as the quality is usually poor. They have usually been copied using a video camera in the cinema. Wait for the movie to be released on DVD as the quality will be much better.

Wish they would make the price of originals more competitive so the average filipino could buy them. A couple of days wages for a DVD

I wasn't talking about the illegal ones, but fair point.

The ones you looked at were probably illegal! The chances of finding a shop selling original DVD's in the market are zero. A newly released original will cost around 500 pesos.

had a memorable trip to the Philippines and made some lasting connections there. Congratulations on becoming a godfather to a baby girl, that’s a very special role. I’m sure you will stay in touch and support her as she grows up. You also have some Philippine friends on Facebook, that’s great. You can use this site to learn more about the culture, history, and people of the Philippines, as well as to ask questions and get advice from other members. I hope you enjoy being part of this community and find it helpful and friendly.
