Wedding In A UK Church, REQUIREMENTS???

Please can anyone help us as we are confused, we have tried to make arrangements to get married in a C of E (Anglican) church after obtaining our Fiancee Visa approval and all other documentation, but the vicar seems to be a little confused as to what he should do! He is unsure if we can get married under Banns or need another special certificate to get married, he has kept us waiting for a few weeks now and we are running out of time to finalise our arrangements for invites etc as we wish to get married in November on the 17th this year.



Anyone come accross this before?

I found a post when googling which kind of talks about the situation.

Basically from what i have read here and there that although C of E Vicars could marry any couple in theory the powers that be want to change the law so loopholes are removed.

It seems best to get in contact with the offices mentioned.

First of all the marriage has to be with a licence and this may have to be granted by diocesan Bishop through the office of the Diocesan Registrar or a speical licence at the discretion of the Archbishop of canterbury (only in exceptional circumstances) or a superintendents registrar certifiacte (which will need to be refered for a COA to be granted as this is the same in effect as cival marriage process except you marry in church). All of this is also currently under review by the general synod who are considering changes to be made the marriage law.

I think the COA was more for those brits who wished to marry a person here on a non fiancee or spouse visa ie work, tourist or student visa.

Hope this helps although brought up a C of E im a bit out of touch with how the church works.

How about you try to explain that in the Queen's English...???

I guess that it will be much easier just going to the Registrar, and a lot cheaper too.

all u have to do is go to the local registrars office to obtain a marriage certificate that will be collected after a couple of weeks then once u get that certificate then u give it to the vicar of the church and thats all! we got married in a baptist church and that was the only thing we have to do...anyway u will know what to do eventually!!!

I Have just obtained a marriage licence through my local vicar , we get married on october 27th , it last for 3 months ( the licence not the wedding ) .

you cannot have your banns read , you have to have a special licence.

we also had to live in the parish for 15 days , so it was back to mums for 2 weeks.

the local vicar should know all about this .

Thanks Matty I have discovered that today. My vicar is a bit memory defficient and keeps forgetting to sort it out for us, apparently the licence is refered to as the Bishops Common Licence, I asked him if I could keep nagging him on the phone

We are out of the electoral area for the church, but we attend that church regularily so that is not a problem because it is very close to us and the vicar agrees it is acceptable. The stupid thing is the official church for us is further away than the one we wish to get married in
