need internet security advice for philippines

when i move to philippines, i am thinking how secure will my internet be, such as internet banking,

when i first get there, the only connection available at the moment is smart bro 5 dongle connection,

    are these safe secure?

or would i be advised to get something else, from what i am told, the equivelant of our internet, is a none wired hub, that transmits, where ours in uk is connected by wire through the phoneline,

    advise appreciated

for me, i use a pc that goes straight to the hub with a network cable (cat 5), i don't use a wireless connection when online banking etc

obvious things, a good virus scanner, malware scanner, i also use this
    http://www.qfxsoftware.com/

but there are other programs similar to this.

never use someone elses pc or a pc in an internet cafe etc for online banking, opening email etc . you don't know if a keylogger or trojan is running on it.

il check that link out, here in uk my security is pretty good, and i always now connect the ethernet cable to use banking or debit credit card transactions, but im concerned over there, i kind of think a usb dongle isnt going to be so secure,
and i know their hubs for internet are transmitted to a transmitter mast, no telefone wires , think its globe

Depending where you are in Phills, you can get DSL from PLDT. Biggest problem there is no competition, so its expensive for a real good connection.

Like most wifi connections smart bro and globe tattoo are not 100% secure
I had PLDT before when i had a condo in pasig = slow speeds and expensive
PLDT use normal phone lines so the further away from the main exchange the slower the speed will be
That was the situation in pasig anyway

Use a UK based VPN, or setup a UK based VPS and do your banking from that...... yes I know most people have no idea what I just said .... so a simpler option is to install a data encrypter for the connection.

The data is unencrypted before it gets to the other end, but it can't be traced to you. This is free https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

Your bank data is already encrypted via HTTPS, so as long as you don't access it via WiFi, then it is fine.

When we lived in Dumaguete we had Smart Cable TV and Internet, as far as security was concerned we used to get a relative or school friend of Maritess to load Norton every 90 days free of charge and we used to give them P100 so it only cost us about a fiver a year. Never had any problems with internet banking or anything else for that matter!

Also I would like to point out that when you have relatives visit you in the Philippines, they may sometimes expect to use your computer to check their Facebook ect: it's a very common thing in the Philippines, if you come across this event my advice is, Nip it in the bud lay down some rules and if you do this the relatives that matter to you are the one's that respect your wishes!
