Following last week's unveiling of Scots star, Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor Who, Glasgow's Appreciation Society for television's
longest~running sci-fi series held a party
in the city centre to celebrate 55-yr-old Capaldi's appointment.
But few regular viewers are likely to be aware of the fact that
'Porridge' actor, the late Fulton Mackay, almost became the
first Scottish 'Doctor' ... after Jon Pertwee quit the role back in 1974.
Seems the dates coincided with rehearsals for a pilot of the jail comedy - in which Fulton was cast as
Principal Officer Mackay alongside "old lag", Fletcher (Ronnie Barker) mocked up as
'Dalek Davros' - being commissioned, and he'd to reluctantly opt out of taking the part of the Time Lord.
So ...
... there you
are, folks.
