Love - hate relationship with the Philippines Over the past 25 years i have met a lot of expats who feel exactly the same way. That's why they keep coming back after swearing that they have had a enough of the place!
If anything i would say older people have a harder time adapting to the Philippines as they are more set in their ways. Most of the younger ones tend to leave because they run out of money. They usually come back again for another try at some point in their life

You can work in the Philippines if you have your own business or should i say the wife's business.

Sure there are some frustrations but i always choose to see the funny side

Well Tiger, I have never experienced any noise at night apart from some traffic and twice in Dumaguete when the Catholic church had some noisy procession at 3am in the morning with drums and bells waking everyone up also making all the dogs bark. Now that is bad manners and lack of consideration for others! Come home Tiger

I had no noise issues when i was living at Mayfield Park Pasig
These places were not so cheap to rent and dogs were not allowed
Maybe due to the cost of living there it attracted a better class of person
Living in a busy barangy would be a non starter for me and i applaud you for even trying it

    He's got a point Brian
When I was there we too stayed and lived ghetto stylie be it only for a couple of weeks...the noise and smells was terrible not to mention the roaches and suchlike crawling over you just as you nodded off to sleep. ..Thank goodness it was only temporary We were grateful for the help to get us through a batch of financial embarrassment, as you do

Many nice gated sub divisions nearby, they came at a price though.

well i,m in what you could call a middle class sub divison but you,re never gonna change what you see here so you just got to go with the flow until it gets too much .I lived in lapu lapu city for 2 years with much the same issues i,m not rich so renting in the higher end sub divisions are out for me .btw many laws here are ignored regarding home ownership people do what they want most of the time being neighbourly is not high on their agenda in my opinion.

We do see things differently as i see Filipino's as neighbourly.
Yes i agree with your comments about noise. That is part of the culture and other neighbours don't have a problem with it so what gives us the right to say what is right or wrong.

I often read on the forum comments about Paki's and other nationalities not integrating into British society. Ask a filipino the same question about foreigners who live here. They will tell you that the vast majority of them are rude, snobbish, isolated and never really try to integrate. Sounds familiar!

Not quite a fair comparison Jake. .the majority of the foreigners are making valued contributions to the Philippines economy. .unlike the leeching parasites here.
Nothing unreasonable about having a moan about loud music.
We too had to endure such behaviour which according to my wife was accepted as normal. We had a jeepney parked by our bedroom window. .Every day we'd be awoken with the room being filled with black exhaust fumes. Again, that was accepted because the jeepney owner always parked there. .nobody complained.
I want my life how I want it. .not a test of endurance.
Like the foreigners wanting to come here for the money for doing sod all and for us wanting a better life on the cheap.

thats because the PH attracts a lot of dregs in society sexpats etc I would,nt integrate with them either if I was a Filipino .right now a dog is barking its head off the same one that goes at it all night now if a Filipino in england had the same problem it would be dealt with thats the difference jake here people just tolerate all kinds of crap because it aint in their nature .and the ones that do complain will probably bring out a gun here its very common .thats another reason why ive been told to keep quiet because they would,nt think twice of shooting you dead .you can kill anyone that comes onto your property here if they feel threatened .anyway people deal with culture changes better than others I guess all i,m saying is i,m not sure I could retire in this place where i,m at maybe another location by the sea might do it

You obviously think everything is so fantastic there in the Phills
The fact that any "kanu" could criticize the Phills is unpalatable for you
The reason why other Filipino's don't complain about the noise there is because they are afraid to complain
I saw this first hand in Bernabe Compound in Las Pinas City
You are trying to paint a picture that other pinoys dont mind the noise well i totally disagree
Keeping one's noise down is about common decency and respecting other people around you and that is not
    immune from the Pinoy culture

The reason why we are seen as snobbish is because some people there envy our wealth
Yes i had to keep isolated sometimes because i did not want anything stolen

As someone else pointed out i see nothing appealing about living in some rat infested barangy where even if you sneeze it could be heard by 5 other households

I put it to you = our minimum standards when it comes to living conditions are much higher than the average barangy there

I like the Philippines and the people there as well but it winds me up when some people lose touch with the real reality of what it is like living in a normal barangy

... it may seem like that at times, Steve ... ... BUT, there's always the NHS to "fall back on" here in good ol' much maligned if you're unfortunate enough to develop arthritis or catch pneumonia as a result of our persistent damp, weather!

I've had noisy neighbours in the past here in the UK which drove me into buying a detached house. I live in a village and there is even a local rooster nearby but thankfully double glazed windows keep most of its noise at bay. I used to stay with my brother in Paranaque and Alabang, nice areas but there were still noisy roosters there too and despite being there for only a few weeks at a time, I found the very early wake up call hard to tolerate every morning . ......... pesky birds!

You have my sympathy Tiger 31, I hope that you make it back to the UK before long for a better night's sleep

As Mick pointed out, noisy neighbours are everywhere not just the Philippines but it could be worse I suppose. You could live near a busy intersection with trikes/bikes going past all the time.

Stayed in a hotel in AC last year with the non stop noise of traffic through the night and this was not in the centre of town. Then an adjacent property began blasting out Tom Jones songs at 7am.

Do what Lordna suggested and get some earplugs Tiger and see if that helps.

Yes you have got the umberella of the NHS here at the moment. For how long I wouldnt like to guess. Jake you have more experience of what the filipinos say obviously but like I said earlier a smile and Hi dont cost anything thats probably why I havnt had a problem yet. And it is true some nationalities do not intergrate here and they dont intend to.

    Thanks Andy
The NHS is a great thing and any country that has such a service should consider themselves very fortunate.
As you said a smile and a hi goes a long way in any culture.

    Different folks, different strokes.

I always believed that life is what you make of it.
    We all have choices. Period.
My choice is to enjoy a life in Philippines. It suits me, I like it. I don't feel threatened.

All harmless banter. .let's not get all defensive here Brian and I was just expressing an opinion. I dare say just like me, the dream of living a life in The Philippines will return at some stage.

My only comment on this subject is, I've been travelling to the Philippines for 25 years and most of that time twice a year and on the strength of that always fancied living there for the rest of my life so I gave it a try, and after 16 months returned to UK because I discovered that it was not what I imagined at all. I realised that I knew nothing at all about Philippines until my experience of living there!

To be honest I think more members on this forum would like to comment more than they are doing, and don't say too much in case they offend someone!

very true I will always tell it the way I see it ,if people get offended then they can reply with a different view thats what forums are for in my view to give people the facts if they have not been here before everyones stories help others build a picture of what life is like in this country .
