Not new for me as I work out in Wales and this policy has been going for a couple of years over there.
Wales has been charging for plastic bags since I came here in 2011.

I can't understand why they don't revert back to paper carrier bags that can be 100% recycled!

My uncle experienced that when a supermarket in Laguna was implementing it a couple of years ago. He bought canned/tinned goods, some hotdogs and other frozen meat. They put it in a paper bag because they said they're implementing the use of it instead of plastic bags. So since my uncle didn't know about it, he agreed.
What happened was he when he was going down via the escalator, the paper bag got ripped because it got wet (because of the frozen meat) and add the fact that tinned goods are heavy and everything went rolling down the escalator to the floor. He was soooo annoyed and went back to the counter and told everything about it. To his surprise, he found out that he had the option to use a plastic bag and only have to pay for it which the lady in the counter didn't tell him.

I always use my back pack to put my shopping in, its easier to carry like that

when we go shopping for a big shop i always take my IKEA blue bag i borrowed years ago, fits perfect in the trolleys and just lifts straight up into the car, another great tip

Discarded plastic is a bloody menace in all its forms....especially to wild life.
Sadly, most of the rest of the world will simply ignore the problem. Very depressing.
I always make my plastic bags last as long as possible, then use them instead of waste-bin liners in the kitchen...plus I have those big long-lasting 're-usable' ones from the supermarket (only 10p each), which I now walk to and from with my shopping, so need stronger bags anyway.

It works well in Wales and Ireland, and a 30p bag lasts over a year. I'm sure that'll hurt the economy

Aldi & Lidl have both ALWAYS charged for theirs!! But then, of course ...
clegg was just on the news, what was he going on about, poverty, job losses, student fees or debts, no plastic bagsand how the money will go to charity

In Spain we have had a charge for plastic bags for several years. However, there still seem to be as many, containing rubbish, dumped in the bins.
I use either large re-usable 10 euro cent bags from a major supermarket, or smaller ones which I bought a couple of years ago in Penang.
When we buy loose fruit and veg there are free bags, which we use for the rubbish destined for the bins.
i recycle them, i put my lunch in one, then take them back home and use them as bin liners, so I'll have to buy reusable bags for shopping, something to put me lunch in and bin liners
clegg just amazes me, it's like he's done something unbelievable like he's solved the Syrian crisis or the unemployment problem which will take some doing, all he's done is told supermarkets that employ more than 250 people you'll have to charge 5p for plastic bags
With Cleggy and cronies it's all just window dressing, especially as it's conference time.
They probably still can't believe their luck being able to sit at the 'big table' anyway.
Next election they'll be gone, I hope. We need one party to get things done, unemcumbered by shirt-tail hangers.

I used to work at M&S, and the introduction of the 5p charge, although annoying because of customer comments, was probably the best thing they ever did in my 11 years there. Sales weren't affected as people still need to buy food, but our store alone saw an 85% decrease in the number of bags used! Within a couple of years, pretty much everyone coming in brought their own bag.M&S have been charging 5p in the UK for years.

This should have come into effect much earlier IMO
I think people are forgetting that it used to be the norm to charge for carrier bags years ago.

The thing that gets my goat is that when one gets say one item, maybe in a chemist’s, which is packaged, that you are offered a (free) plastic bag as well. I always refuse unless I have several items and really need a bag.
Every time I go shopping on m&s and I forgot to carrying a plastic bag. I get it for 5p.
