I use Adblock Plus add-on for my Firefox, which is very efficient.
On the forum pages here, you may see some chevrons to the right side of the page (if the page is showing ads). Press that chevron to get rid of the sidebar on the right and give full width for the text.
If only a narrow video screen is displayed on the page here...as I have, go to 'display' (top right) and click...select 'hybrid'. You can go back to 'linear' when you've finished viewing.
On youtube, you can get rid of text and other stuff overlaying the screen by clicking on the little white conversation baloon at the bottom right of the video screen.
I hope I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs here...but just in case.
Try clicking on the video title in white and it should open in a new window. I have Chrome too and this works for me.Very clever

Mine looks like this ^ with an ad for cheap calls to the Philippines in the last quarter of the box. The normal ad box along the right hand side I can control, as in having it there or collapsing it.
Maybe it's a google chrome thing
