    Car Insurance info

Fred, jake or anyone in the Philippines or anyone who knows...

Keith wants to know if there is any way a resident of UK can get a car insurance in the Philippines for a month or a year (or whatever the policy time available)? Or does one need to be a resident?

Thanks for the answer in advance!

You can buy what is called 'a Foreign Use Extension'.
I have no idea whether it can be purchased for countries outside EU, but at least the principle exists.

Maybe contact a major car insurance company

    Sorry that's all I know

Is the car insured at the moment? Not sure but it may work in the same principal as here where he maybe able to get added as an additional driver under the existing policy

Yes, the car is already insured. Keith is just wondering whether he can get a separate policy for him. Last time he was in the Philippines, my aunt has a spare car that she offered for us to use. She asked the insurance company if she can add Keith's name in the policy for a certain period of time, but the insurance company said they can't do that.

If the car is already insured it should cover any driver

There are 2 types of car insurance in the Philippines. One is compulsory and you have to take this out every year when you registrar the vehicle. Costs virtually nothing and is worthless if you are involved in an accident

The second is comprehensive insurance taken out using a private company. This insurance should cover any driver, no matter how old or how much driving experience they have. I have never heard of someone being named as the sole driver on their insurance policy here in the Philippines.

If your Auntie has car insurance through a private company it should cover Keith.
Have just looked at the car insurance policies we have with 3 different companies and they all state the same thing.

    Authorized Driver;
Any of the following (a) The insured
    (b) Any person driving on the insured's order or with his permission.

Provided that the person driving is permitted in accordance with the licensing law or other regulations.

As Keith is allowed to drive in the Philippines for 90days on a UK license he should be covered. He can borrow one of our cars as long as it come's back with the hubcaps!

    Thanks for the info Jake!

My aunt said she'll ask her insurer to add Keith as an authorised driver of her car. I'm just waiting what the outcome will be. I hope it'll be approved coz it'll save us a lot in renting a car.

Ask your Aunt to read the insurance policy. The car insurance policies here are different from the UK

Insurance in Philippines is about as good as obtaining a driving licence in Philippines, it's a worthless requirement. Driving licence, a sight test 5mins, and you can obtain a full licence!
