    Sharpest fall in 16 yrs number of folks claiming jobless benefits

    (TXT (Taiwan OTC: 4969.TWO - news) }
    LONDON, Oct (KOSDAQ: 039200.KQ - news) 16 (Reuters) - Britain's unemployment rate held steady in the three months to August but the sharpest fall in more than 16 years in the number of people claiming jobless benefits showed the labour market was continuing to heal.
    Unemployment was 7.7 percent in the June-August period, unchanged from May-July, the Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday.

    The percentage of people aged 16-64 who are in work rose to 71.7 percent, the highest since the three months to February 2009, the ONS said.

    Does this include the 100s of thousands of immigrants working for £3 an hour ?

    That depends of whether they're legal or not I could do with a few at £3/hour as my garden is in a right state

    It's all a wee bit confusing. Elsewhere you can read that more people are in employment than ever before which supports the argument that there are to many immigrants here .
    Apparently there also 1.5 million people doing part time work because they cant find a full time position which just goes to show we're not a nation of useless benefit scroungers. Some people are prepared to help themselves in difficult times.

    That's one way for a Labour supporter to read it Another way of manipulating those statistics is that under Labour rule more people were made unemployed after March 2009, and now the Conservatives are creating jobs for them

    I think it is. I'd be surprised if you can cut your way to higher employment. It would be nice to see some attempt to make a hole in the 16 to 24yo figure to do something positive to stop these people becoming benefit dependant.
