‘Dangerous’ radioactive material stolen from truck in Mexico

A truck carrying dangerous radioactive material has been stolen in Mexico.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said it had been informed by Mexican authorities that the truck was taking cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive storage centre when it was stolen on Monday.

Cobalt-60 has the potential to be used to make a ‘dirty bomb’, where explosives are used to disperse the radiation.
