Thanks Terpe. I have been trying the UKVI site - kept going back to the same page to state which visa was required. No matter how many times I filled in the correct bits when I selected the button for the next step, it went back to the previous step

If you've already registered for an account then just log-in. Otherwise hit the 'Register an Account' button.
When you complete the registration details you'll see a message that says "Your registration details were created successfully. You have been sent an email with instructions on how to complete the registration process."
The confirmation e-mail is sent automatically very quickly and will state:-

Your Visa4UK account has now been created. For security reasons, your account is currently locked.
