Prepared at a family-owned bakery in Banbury, these spiced, sweet buns are a generous size and they don’t skimp on the fruit – apricots, Chilean flame raisins and lemon and orange peels. You can see why they beat Harrods and Heston in a blind tasting.

2. Bettys Large Hot Cross Bun



This might look more like a panettone than a hot cross bun, but it tastes just as it should; buttery, lightly doughy, with lots of moist, spicy fruit. There’s a lot of crust, but it tastes so good, no one will mind.

3. Marks & Spencer Golden Wholemeal Hot Cross Buns



We’re not sure if wholemeal buns are healthier, especially with so much golden syrup and sugar listed in the ingredients. It’s not heavy or whole-foody, but light and fluffy with plenty of spice and sultanas. Good for a decadent breakfast option.

These pleasingly round hot cross buns are packed with oodles of fat, juicy fruit and the amount of spice is spot on. No wonder they’ve won taste awards this year.

5. Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference, Fruity



As the name suggests, they’ve certainly gone to town on the fruit quantities, but it’s by no means overkill and works really well in these rich, moist buns. The texture is light and they toast evenly without burning like some.

No prizes for guessing the overriding flavour in these buns and, be warned, it is strong. But it works a treat, particularly with the balance of plump, juicy raisins.

Baked fresh every day in Morrisons’ bakery, these are well-spiced with a zesty orange flavour and there is plenty of soft, juicy fruit. They’ve been criticised for being too bread-like, but the texture worked for us.

Some people get incensed at the idea of mucking about with traditional, not to mention religious, recipes. Not Heston Blumenthal. These light, sweet and aromatic buns are delicious; with just the right spice balance they have a ginger kick.

You could pretend these are home-made. They look traditional and taste home-baked too, with liberal amounts of dried fruit and the ideal amount of spice. They are slightly denser than some, but they are still very moreish if you want to splash out on an Easter snack.

Oh dear, my favourite Hot Cross Buns aren't featured...I just love those Date and Cranberry ones from Waitrose at £1.59 for 4

I'll second the Aldi ones delicious lightly toasted, buttered then jam or honey

I always find that buns from a local baker are much better than the supermarket ones.

I normally stick to M&S as they are nice but accidentally bumped into Heston Blumenthal's ginger and acacia honey ones from Waitrose this year and they're yummy
