If your ancient machine leaves you boiling with rage, why not update your kitchen with a new model?........

1. Dualit Architect Jug

Out last year, this was Dualit’s first new kettle in six years but we think it was worth the wait. With its interchangeable panels you can alter the look – colours include grey, green, teal, white and black – and it’s quiet and energy efficient, albeit slightly slow and heavy.
£79.99, lakeland.co.uk

2. Russell Hobbs Cambridge

You get your money’s worth with this kettle. It boils quickly and quietly, even with just one cup’s worth of water inside, which saves time and electricity. It is fitted with a good limescale filter and a cup included for filling baby bottles and measuring water for cooking.
£24.99, amazon.co.uk

3. Cuisinart Traditional

We like the large water window on this smart-looking round kettle. And it’s sturdy, quiet and has an easy-to-grip handle. Just note that the stainless steel does get hot to the touch.
£50, houseoffraser.co.uk

4. Breville Aurora

Here’s another energy-saving kettle which allows you to boil one cup at a time. It’s quick and quiet, has an efficient limescale filter and is available in cream, red and black. Just watch the rim when you open it up as it gets hot.
£49, tesco.com

5. Bosch Village

This is very good value for a Bosch kettle and despite being cheaper than other models, it’s good. It’s easy to use, to see how much water’s inside and it’s energy efficient, quick and quiet. Our only gripe is that it’s top heavy when full.
£29.95, johnlewis.com

6. Delonghi Scultura

Need tea or coffee the moment you wake up? You won’t have to wait long with this super-quick kettle. It manages to look retro and futuristic in one smart package. Choose from white, grey or black high-gloss finishes.
£99.95, johnlewis.com

7. Wilko Everyday Value Kettle

Okay, so this is a no-frills option but it does the job quickly and quietly for under a fiver. It’s light too, so it’s a good one for anyone who has trouble lifting heavier kitchen kit.
£5, wilko.com

8. Russell Hobbs Easy

This one’s a fast boiler – it took less than two-and-a-half minutes to do four cups. If you’re only making one cuppa (which, by the way, isn’t possible to do in a lot of kettles), it takes just 45 seconds. We’d like it to have a water window, but other than that it’s a very good buy.
£19.99, argos.co.uk

9. KitchenAid Artisan

The retro-looking KitchenAid Artisan range now has a kettle alongside their popular stand mixers and blenders. It has some nice touches, including the multiple temperature settings and gauge which show you exactly how hot the water is. It’s also speedy at boiling water and energy efficient, although it’s not as fast or quiet as some.
£107.10, debenhams.com

10. Lakeland Travel Kettle

Miss a cuppa when you’re away from home? This new travel kettle, which beats the socks off others on the market, boils enough water for two. It’s light and small enough to slip into your suitcase and it comes with plastic beakers, spoons and a canister for coffee and sugar.
£22.99, lakeland.co.uk
