Well you could be right there John, I witnessed a van reversing at a stupid angle and he was clearly going to hit a parked car - he did, and put a dent in it and just drove off laughing - luckily I got his reg and left a note on the car - hope he got a knock on the door.

... I disagree!
Hopefully, most people would've the common decency NOT to simply drive off after accidentally reversing into someone else's unoccupied vehicle. And ...... frankly, I'm surprised to read your response
... coming as it does, from a former [senior] police officer!
Probably I shouldn't be... since, in fairness, I'd imagine incidents of this nature are too commonplace for the police to do anything about - if, indeed, they're even reported at all - following the event - as, of course, by then, the person(s) responsible is/are likely to've long fled the scene.

Now, I'm not a driver... but allow me to pinpoint an incident that occurred many years ago.
It involved my late first wife who, back then, had just passed her driving test a few months' previously.
Having purchased an old Vauxhall Viva, she decided to take the kids to the beach at St Andrews (30 miles away) one lovely summer's day.
Alas ... by the time they reached their destination, thick mist had blown in off the sea to envelop the shoreline. Undeterred, she made to park the car there anyway. And in doing so, reversed into the bumper of an expensive~looking Volvo.
Turned out damage was minimal. Nevertheless - in spite of her arthritic knee joints - my poor wife spent the next hour trekking the long seafront, knocking on many doors in a determined effort to trace the owner of the vehicle. Which she eventually managed to do. And when she did ... the plump, "matronly~looking", middle-aged female thanked my wife for her honesty, adding: "Please, my dear ... these things happen ... you really mustn't upset yourself".
However, the woman's pseudo smarminess didn't stop her from claiming off my wife's motor insurance!![]()
