Jose Manuel Barroso tells David Cameron, ever so politely, he’s lost the game

So Dave's con is over, he cant do

he essentially slammed the door on the idea that Britain’s prime minister could negotiate anything more than a few cosmetic changes before staging that referendum in 2017.

Well Thatcher, you're partly responsible for the folly

Maggie wanted closer ties with US, it was Heath who favoured Europe

Unlike Heath, Margaret Thatcher (PM 1979-90), shown here with President Ronald Reagan at Camp David in 1986, favoured stronger ties with the US over the European Community.

that's capitalism for you Les, tell 3.5 billion people they need to work harder , typical Tory rant, just tell people to work harder while the rich get richer

The other way of looking at that is

Top 1% of earners contribute almost a third of all the income tax paid into Treasury coffers

so more than 70% of income tax is paid by 99% of the UK population, yet this 1% own 21% of the wealth, it seems they are doing really well considering what tax they pay

as for the top 10% which owns 53% of the wealth , leaving 90% sharing 47% , dont tell me you think that's fair

It seems we're not going to agree again Joe

In your argument, the top 1% own 21% of the wealth but pay over 30% over the taxes. Is that fair

The top 10% owning 53% of the wealth leaving 47% to the 90% left, that gives me something to aspire to, not to be jealous of Why isn't it fair, should all the wealth be distributed evenly Should the govenor of the Bank of England be paid the same as a labourer

yes it is fair as they get 1/5 of the pie while 99% share 4/5's of the pie
not forgetting 1/10 own more than half the pie, while 9/10s have to share less than half the pie.

aspire to or greed ? doesn't seem this 1% or 10% are aspiring to anything but grabbing more of the pie, if they wanted to aspire to something and not greed they would be sharing more of it and not keeping for themselves.

did they teach you the concept of sharing and greed at primary school

I'm not greedy and i work hard.
I see all sorts of people but the ones who have achieved in life and have earnt their position and wealth have my respect.
The ones who get on my tits are the people who think the world owes em a living, the ones who moan about there job all the time.

    Do something else!
I'm just working class,I have a few mates who work for council, post office etc and they do quite well.
Like i have said before you are master of your own destiny-if you don't earn enough change jobs-learn new skill but don't blame everyone else.

    I'm happy with my lot.
The rich guys i pick up have spent years in one industry building up their status and getting deserved recognition for bringing the company forward.
Why should they not be rewarded

I'm a firm believer in spread the wealth, so everyone in the company is on a percentage bonus, the more we make the more they earn.

I worked for a privatly owned company, started on low wage in a warehouse and over next 3 years advanced to pricing clerk, then asst Plumbing/heating manager and was on a good wage.
I took all the training offered, did postal exams and at the age of 21 was on a very good wage:xxgrinning--00xx3
Another lad did not put much effort in and remained in the warehouse-should I have split my money with him Joe?

From your posts I find that hard to believe, but hey, maybe I'm wrong

but being responsible not just for yourself but someone else changes some people attitudes to life

I wonder Les, how many companies have profit sharing , I've worked at many, never had it once, so maybe some employers are more generous than others

Joe, I started off as the van driver 23 years ago and now I own the company

You, or anyone else is more than willing to come, have a look round and ask anyone who works for me if they think they're being paid fairly and are happy with their monthly bonuses
The only person in the company that hasn't had a bonus recently is me
