Cool Philippines: Home of the makeshift basketball court

You don't need to go far to find a basketball court in the Philippines. Everywhere you look you will see one, such as this makeshift basketball court in
the Mindanao Region in the south of the country. John Javellana, a freelance photographer based in the country, has been documenting Filipinos' love of the
    game.

No game today but even in the jungle, you will find makeshift basketball courts.

Basketball courts double up during the day for other uses. In this case, as a parking spot for tricycles waiting for passengers in Rizal, just east of Manila.

A 2012 typhoon destroyed much in Kinablangan province but not this basketball court

Almost nothing will stop basketball practice. Here children play in floodwaters caused by monsoon rains in Makati City, Metro Manila in August 2013

Dual use. Clothes hung out to dry at a basketball court in the slum area of Artex, Malabon

Children playing in the Tondo slum, one of the most densely populated areas of Metro Manila

Children play on a basketball court inside the grounds of a church in Samar, southern Philippines

Amid a tangle of electricity pylons, you can just spot a basketball court on the balcony of a home in Baguio City, north of Metro Manila

Boxing and basketball, two of the Philippines' great passions

A basketball court in a street in Tondo

A boy playing basketball in the mountainous region of Corillera, north of Metro Manila

Any shape, anywhere. A tree provides a useful place to hang a basketball hoop

Sadly basketball is by far the No1 sport in the Philippines. It could have something to do with lack of space, as your pictures show a court can be made anywhere

If i was to ask your average filipino about the up and coming world cup they wouldn't have a clue that the tournament will take place this year

I used to watch NCAA when I was in high school. Not because I love the game but because I could be exempted in PE for that week as long as I present the ticket I bought. I was studying in Mapua that time.

I remember when I was young, my sis and I would always fight with my dad and brothers for the TV because they love watching PBA and we can't handle it! That was the reason why my parents bought another TV for us girls in the house. I never really understand the game and never really got the hype that every Filipino has for it. But when I got here in the UK, it didn't take much convincing about watching football. I actually like football and I even ask Keith if there is any match on TV. Hahahaha..
