The way I see it is that individual sports like golf or tennis etc is essentially pay-for-performance.

As we know footballers get paid whether or not the team wins and whether or not individual performances meet expectations.

Yep. And if the team don't perform they still get paid.

So do the golfers - no difference. They don't get as much as the winner but still get a nice little earner. For coming last (70th) it's £12,400

Footballers get less if they lose. Also golfers don't often get broken legs or even bitten by fellow players!
