A new car

Just thinking about a different car.

I do like the Saab but having never driven or owned one before I have no idea about them.

My car I have had over 13 years now, and its just starting to feel different now, just the odd noise and this and that, so I have started to look around but what do I go for?

I get free fuel, diesel so a diesel is what I want, £3000 to spend or more if I see what I want, but I dont know what to go for at all.

I have been to see a few cars but once I am there and I look at one, the cash just doesnt like to leave my pocket sort of thing.

Just bought a new Nissan Qashqai Acenta 2 weeks ago Steve an absolute dream to drive.

It's the 1.5 litre diesel model with a super impressive 73 mpg on motorway runs and 53 mpg around town and a average of 62 mpg all around.

It won 2014 car of the year award and I can see why, a beautiful machine.

For what little driving I now do, I think it's time for me to give up owning a car altogether it saddens me a bit but makes financial sense.

It cost me 23k but got a brill deal on 5 years 4.9% finance...

With that budget you could probably consider a Golf, a Volvo or a Saab Steve.

All well-equipped solidly-built cars...or perhaps a Ford Focus.

Consider an auction car if you've the confidence.

<Long version>Ok, so ideally you want something without a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and something that has had religious oil changes/maintenance. There is so much to go wrong on newer used diesels. For this reason I'd tempted to look at either the older tech 1.9 Diesel from VAG (lots of car choices from Passat to Polo depending on what you need). These will go on forever. Otherwise avoid German at this price point, you're asking for trouble and if a 1.9 VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat doesn't float your boat then I say stick to a Ford or Vauxhall for simple repairs.

Considering how many miles I suspect you do a year a diesel is actually exactly what you don't want, but if the fuel is paid for then that is not an issue.

You could buy a nice old classic for 3 grand....increasing in value, and cheap classic car insurance. REALLY cheap for limited mileage (5,000 a year would be fine for that). Maybe £100 a year or less for you, fully comp...but has to be a second car.

I've done 10,650 miles approx in exactly two years and I put £35 worth of petrol in a month and 90% of my driving has been local, the furthest I've been using Motorway has been Birmingham once, Liecester once, Derby twice, York once and Ripon once!

I have even thought about this Graham, but living in a terrace house with on street parking sometimes a few doors from your front door, I would be too afraid to leave it on the street

Never thought of it like that, insurance cheaper then tax.

I get 100 litres of diesel a month, but I drive a petrol engined car. I sell the diesel but I am losing out I know, so it would be best for my next car to be a diesel but which one.

My daughter works for a VW dealer and the cars that come back which are diesel with problems because they dont do lots of miles does put me off

Diesel engine cars are only beneficial for high mileage users, in fact modern petrol engines do better MPG.

Also I've just renewed my insurance and it's the most I've paid in my life. A real shock to me - £151 per year fully comp - and this time I used RIAS as they were the cheapest. Everyone else quoted £190 and above!
