The Big Miles Per Gallon Rip-Off

While the EU spends endless times sorting out the power of our vacuum cleaners, the motor industry is still allowed to mislead the public, as has done since the dawn of the car.

When I bought my last car, Renault Grand Scenic, the official mileage was 60mpg combined. As I live in the countryside, it should be better than that. I actually get 46mpg! When I check the real mpg sites, that is about right.

Having just ordered a Citreon Grand Picasso, they quote 70mpg, but the actual mpg state 55mpg.

So, when is the EU going to clamp down on this obvious form of misleading advertising?

EU or not these figures always need to be taken with a pinch of salt as the testing is done in almost laboratory conditions. Its foolish to make anything of them other than that the motor will return x amount more or less than a competitors product that you are considering

    http://www.which.co.uk/cars/choosing...w-we-test-mpg/

Buy a Dacia Duster -Renault built by Roma 56mpg £15000 you'll have plenty left to spend on juice

I find all this very confusing. Gallons,Liters,Miles,Kilometers,Diesel,Unleaded..
All I know is that I bought a new Suzuki 1.6 APV and it does about 30km less on a 1000Pesos as a 1996 2.5 diesel.
    Very disappointing to be fair.

I get 55mpg local and if I use motorway I often get 65+ on one occasion I managed 86mpg, I never exceed speed limits and drive smoothly not slowly, remember as a truck driver for many years I was using 16 speed gearboxes and learnt lots of ways to save fuel and brakes!

Very roughly, 170 Km is just over 100 miles
    1000 divided by 62 is about 16
16 litres is just under 4 gallons
100 divided by just under 4 is roughly 28?

So I recon about 28 miles to the gallon, someone will get a calculator out soon to prove me wrong though

    Get it checked Fred.

I persuaded my mate to take one of his TVRs to the rolling road.

It turns out it was 85bhp down on power, and drinking the juice.

Took a matter of minutes for the operator to find and remove the piece of air filter that had come off and almost completely blocked the inlet, plus a few other minor tweaks to restore to full health.

Not sure how new your vehicle is, but often these modern engines are very 'tight' when new, so may use more fuel for the first few 1,000 miles (one like that would also tend to run a bit hot though).

    Good luck mate.

Any new 1600cc vehicle , petrol or diesel can be expected to do a minimum 35 mpg these days I'd say, and that would be when booting it.

i get 52.3 mpg on average out of a 2.0 turbo diesel, medium segment vehicle.

i drive the car v hard, and it still returns this fantastic figure.

75% of my journeys are around town, with average speed = approx. 25mph!

Revealed: The car makers' 'tricks' to boost their MPG claims that leave drivers forking out up to £400 more every year for petrol

Manipulated tests include running cars on over-inflated tyres and taping up gaps in bodywork (to reduce drag)
They are also said to cut weight and using special lubricants to increase distance covered on single gallon of fuel
European consumer body BEUC carried out independent tests

I've always just assumed that anyone trying to sell me something is a lying .

That's why I read the reviews in car mags, etc.
