South African father told he cannot stay in UK with family - because his wife doesn't earn enough

Judge Michael Wilson said that while Mr Engel has the right of a private and family life with his wife and 18-month-old daughter Nyana, he did not have the automatic right to do that in the UK.

“I consider her [Nyana] to be young enough to easily adapt to life there,” he said.
I'm a bit surprised by this

Following the birth of their daughter last year, Natalie Engel earned nearly £20,000 in 2014 from her craft and design business. However, a judge said he still considered her earnings to be “minimal” as he refused Mr Engel’s application to stay.
    Errr....why???
    The minimum threshold is £18,600....

Such cases do serve to point out the unfairness of the current system towards Brits, but 'rules is rules'.

I'd guess that would be her total business revenue and not her taxable earnings.

They met in 2009, lived in SA for 4yrs, he must have come to the UK on a visit visa in 2013

As harsh as it is, it would be unfair on others who applied for the correct visa or who had to wait because of the minimum financial requirement if they were granted a visa

    Everyone Steve

I don't think the rules applied to Peter Mandelson when he brought his young Brazilian "house boy" in
