I always use the carry on for anything that is valuable to me, that way if my suitcase is lost or looked into , there is no great lost, more of a inconvenience

    This.

However, I flew to San Francisco the day after one of the bombings in the 2000s (forget which, might have been the shoe bomber event). First the flight was moved from LHR to LGW, I noticed from home and went directly to Gatwick, pity the other passengers who got bussed. The flight eventually boarded hours later and we were not allowed to take anything onto the plane except our boarding pass and any keys without remotes. Everyone's laptop bag and electronics were in the hold. Of course that was the fastest boarding flight I've ever been on - walk on, find seat number, sit down.

Keith and I usually just put clothes and "pasalubong" (which are usually just clothes and chocolates) in our check-in luggages. We both have our gadgets (camera, laptop, cellphones, tablet), Keith's medicines, and money in both our hand carry.

Watch what you put in your bags when boarding a ferry too. I had my electric shaver swiped while using Ocean Jet.
