When the last fox hunting took place, the farmers around my village would have been quite happy if they'd been given the permission to shoot the hunt when it trampled illegally over their land. Which it often did.

The fox can be a pest.
Rats are animals too.. Is there a petition against that other ancient and honorable pastime rat baiting using ferrets and terriers? Like it or not..Local country residents still employ them..
Why are cruel traps like glue boards not made illegal?

Shoot 'em ... the rhyming word to 'hunt' (in plural).

seems a reasonable enough proposition, ! But with, say, an airgun (in lieu of bullets) as it might give them a taste of what it feels like to be on the receiving end for once.
