RAF Unveils VC “Battle Of Britain” Typhoon

The RAF today unveiled at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire a state-of-the art Typhoon fighter jet in a Battle of Britain era paint scheme to commemorate this year being the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and to acknowledge the bravery and sacrifice of those often referred to as “The Few”: the aircrew who took part in the battle. The Typhoon is also painted with the 249 Squadron identification number of the only Fighter Command pilot awarded a Victoria Cross during the battle: Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson VC DFC. The Typhoon along with a WWII Spitfire, as part of a Synchro-pair, will perform aerial displays at air shows across the UK this summer.

Sydney Camm the designer (also responsible for the camshaft and Hawker Typhoon, Hunter & Harrier fighters) was born in Windsor - there is a replica Hurricane near the Thames in recognition of this great man

Brilliant aircraft, and I believe reputed to have actually been more 'successful' and nicer to fly than the prettier Spitfire.

Love stuff like this,I know they are more modern but I remember going to Elvington air show with my kids a good few years ago.Yards away from me was a harrier jump jet just hovering above the ground.The noise and vibration was amazing-he shot in the sky did a few loops and rolls etc.then the commentator said the pilot was nipping over tp Blackpool (did not bomb it tho) to do the same excercise (about a 100 miles away) but he would be back in about 20 mins or so
i could not get my head around that amazing

I was lucky enough to spend a whole week at the Farnborough Airshow back in 1970...complete with first flypast of the new Concorde.

I remember being taken as a kid to a massive show at Greenham Common years before they put the Tomahawks there. It was a huge base with the longest military runway in the UK. There was obviously a big yank influence on the show and I'll always remember a whole squadron 20 odd USAF F4 Phantoms flying in from Germany doing the display and then going back. The ground shook

I've probably posted this before, but this is the 75 seater 'Hermes' plane that we flew in from Heathrow (Tent ) to Singapore, back in 1955, when I was aged 4yrs.

3 day trip, with 7 stops for refuelling.

I remember it well...including the steam train journey to London.

Excellent Graham My Dad was stationed at RAF Butterworth for a while and he told me they trained him down to Singapore to go on a troopship home - when he got there he wangled a flight - 1st refuelling stop Butterworth

We DID come back from Singapore on a (former) troop ship, in 1958. Lovely 21 day cruise, courtesy of the Royal Navy, as my mother had chest TB.
