Silly headline though, it should speak of asylum seekers since this proposed policy does not concern all types of immigrants, only asylum seekers. It's hard enough already to explain people the difference between asylum, family/spouse migration, work migration etc. And mixing up or using general terms certainly doesn't help the general public understanding the differences between these immigration types and the different rules and legislations that apply.

Having said that, in the long term a common EU or Schengen asylum system would be best: letting people apply from any memberstate or embassy (so you don't have to risk traveling illegally such as by the dangerous route from Libya to Italy). Applications could then be processed to split economical migrants who falsy claim asylum from actual refugees. Actual refugees could then be distributed along the entire EU or Schengen according to a number of factors (space, current number of people from a certain country or group etc.) as to evenly spread the refugees. Most wish to head for the (north) western nations, while the east of the EU could take up more refugees. A common system could help in a fair distribution of people (and the costs etc. that come with that).

The current proposal really cannot be implemented on short notice, the distrubtion seems still to have a bias that would work negatively for the (north) western members. That Italy and Greece cannot shelter all these people is pretty clear but the way those states deal with the asylum seekers isn't really that good either (letting too many people continue on further into the EU). While at it it would be nice to deal with those silly enclaves Spain has in Morocco... But the chances of Spain giving those up (or the British giving up Gibraltar) seem pretty much close to zero.. You'd almost wish for an EU dictatorship for a few years to sort out more proper borders etc. Would save a lot of NIMBY behaviour from all EU/EEA members.

I don't want any of them ...illegals, bum boat people, students so called "asylum seekers", economic migrants - if the Euro Trash are mug enough to let this rabble breach their borders then they should keep them.

We need a rigidly controlled points based immigration system
