    Growing old

A work colleague has just started talking about his in laws health,
It looks like his father in law will have to go into a home he has dementia, his mother in law is too frail to look after him now so at this moment they are looking at things that they can do.
The cost to put the father into a care home starts from over £700 a week and going upward to over £1000 a week, they have savings plus pensions too and there own house.
It does make you wonder why are we buying our own house and save towards your old age just to pay for your care when there are the others who dont save and live off the state who gets it all for free it seems,
I dont intend to be here in England when i get old. Who knows where i will be? but i am going to spend my money how and where i want too.

Yep fair point but perhaps if the good people did not subsidise it for the rest of us it would not be free.

They can't expect their kids to fork out £700+ p/w to put them in one of these homes can they?

No Jamie but they can expect you to put a extension on your house and care for them.
With his private pension and his savings that will go a long way towards the cost, the council will pay a little towards it.
The £700+ was one of the cheapest places but they are moving him out of there, after 3 days he was still in the same clothes and he had not been showered, most probably thats what you dont get for £700+

What is galling is the crap food they give pensioners - I pick up carers with the smart price Asda crap destined for care homes. For £700 plus a week I would want my food from Waitrose!

As a decorator, I used to get a lot of work doing up warden flats for the aged..
They were often purchased by the "Family" after a house sale.
It was an eye opener let me tell you.. Could I end up like that living amongst strangers and being told, "Its for the best"??? ....Not on your nelly mate!!
I think I much prefer the way Filipino`s care for their older family members.

Sod the food. I'd want sexual favours for that amount.

I am under orders from my young lady to live at least another 30 years.

    Old age ?

...Don't worry about it...don't care. Live every day as if it was your last.

Same orders from my Maritess, I'm sure I'll be around many years yet as I've never been so busy, she's a full time job!

For 'normal' frail elderlyness I agree, but what about mental issues? It will mean an adult family member has to quit work to care for the senior, which often means they can't afford to live there. Vicious circle. There are more non-working adults in family groups in the Philippines who can do this caring.

I agree. Caring for the elderly (by family) is a much more practical proposition in the Phils. Lots of family members living in close proximity. Cheap labour also, if needed.

....And why do you think I chose a professional OAP carer to accompany me into my senility ?

Well, we've no friends or relatives in the UK and Maritess says she'll be the only person at my funeral, wish I could dig a grave in our garden ready for the occasion in 30 years time!

Never think you're old Arthur, just convince yourself that you have 30 years ahead of you, it really does make you feel young!

Dont dig it to near the pond as it will leak into your patch
