Us 'bigoted late-middle-aged men' (since you mentioned stereotypes) are expressing a view formed from extensive life experience, so please show a little respect and don't be so insulting, just because that view doesn't happen to coincide with yours.

Yep I agree with all that's said. What I would say is these people often are not trying to escape persecution, they want the goodies on offer over here. If not, why don't they stay in France? It's ok saying we should not be so bitter - tell you what, if anyone on here wants to let some of these chancers over here out of sympathy then let them live with you and please post the pics for us to see
Unfortunately you are correct, if all they wanted was a more secure life they could have stayed in Italy or France and not bothered to come to Calais....
It's not about being nasty or anything but at the end of the day they add nothing to this country and so often take and abuse what people have worked so hard for to build a better future for our children and grandchildren - they are my priority!
The problem with France and nearly all other European countries is that as 'ethnic' immigrants have no chance of making anything of themselves. Yes I know some come for the free ride, but many just want to make something of their lives.
I'm not defending the UK benefits system one bit. But I fully understand why they would choose the UK.
