Retirement in the Philippines:The Truth

Retirement in the Philippines usually involves a huge culture shock.
Life here grows on you.
Either grows on you to stay, or grows on you to get out.

In my 18 months living here I've experienced all those extremes and can easily understand why some folks would grow to hate living here.

I'd be heartbroken if I had to leave. I'm now settled and I've found peace.
I'll be relocating to Marikina City in May and look forward to another chapter.

Since 1997 we've relocated 13 times........seems to be part of my life.
Hoping to now settle down.....

Don't know about that but it's almost like our destiny in moving.
Still get stressed about it.
It's not an easy journey from Davao to Manila. Spending plenty of time boxing up..............again.

... 'fraid I've only visited the Phils twice - BOTH times in quick succession - for three weeks in September 2008 ... closely followed by 3 months from November of that same year until February 2009.

Having said that, we're hoping to go back again in 2017, in order to attend the of one of Myrna's relatives ... at which we've been asked to be ninang & ninong, respectively.

I love living there. I only left to find more work...darned Chinese flooding the world with steel!!!

But unlike Peter, I never had second thoughts. We live just outside a lovely small town, have a resort directly over the road. Close to the sea, close to lakes for fishing, close to a big enough town for emergency treatment and far enough away from other family not to be a cash cow. Those who have visited us know what I mean. I also have several western friends who are just the best type of people who are there even if you don't see them for a while, (jake lol) I can't wait to get back after I find some more work.

Unfortunately it wasn't for me, we lived in a beautiful location right on the beach, but over time things got to me and I eventually had to get back to civilisation. I suppose the people were just too laid back and everything that was done seemed to be done the easiest way and not the best...
Still a lovely place to spend my hols though...

Steel ... hah! Now you mention the word ... it sounds [phonetically] the same as steal.

would seem to have a certain ring of truth about it ... in so far as the damn Chinese [appear] to've all but "stolen" the industry's [once?] British monopoly.

Like anything in life its you that has to change to where you are, some just cannot do that, they want there little England with the Sunday roast and everything the same ,
I have no idea what to expect when we are there, i have a idea what i would like and thats down to me to try to get it,
I am frightened , i am worried and i am thinking sometimes are we doing the right thing too, but all the worries are because here in England i know how to live , where to go and what to do,
Its down to each of us to plan for the future , yes many are happy where ever they are , but i have to try it, and with help from many members here i am sure i will be fine,

Indeed steve, you do live in a beautiful part of the world, is that lot still free at the back of you, or have you had to buy that for your ever growing family ,
I have just thought where our house sits between yours and Jake's i recon we could have some sort of easy get togethers
