For half that amount you could build a beautiful house in Philippines, but having said that, the house in question is rather nice for the price.
Added to which, who would fancy living in France right now with the security issues that they have... I know i wouldnt.
Seems a lot for the money, but bear in mind that most Europeans dislike the Brits and basically you'd be 'on your own'... as with some of the poor suckers in Spain.

I went to University in France, used to live and work in Amsterdam too, and spend a lot of time around Europe. I find no issue with any nationality. The only thing is that you need to 'fit in' to whereever you move. So if you buy a place in the South of France in a village, then learn French and partake in the local community, life will be good. You can't live as a Brit in other countries and have the locals accept you. (I exclude the Brit expat chavvy enclaves such as Benidorm from this though.)
By the way, the above is why all the immigrants are queueing at Calais. The UK lets them settle here and continue living like they were back at home in Mogadishu/Aleppo/etc.
Like anything in life it seems to be the people in charge cannot get on, everyone else seems to manage, but there is the odd one who has to do it there way or no way at all
Yes, my brother has a house in France, but he's also bi-lingual French-English, which I'm sure helps... very pro-European.
His father-in-law used to be head of British Steel Europe (when it existed).
We have interesting conversations, but don't quite have physical fights anymore, like when we were kids.
We very very seriously considered a house in Alsace. Very good price, very nice mountain and area with skiing and local wines. I had friends there too, but it just didn't sit well with my wife.
Meant a whole new language and culture for her and no friends or family connection.
On the whole we made a pretty good decision where to retire given the options.
Now, If I'd had been single it would have been a beautiful bachelor-pad in Turckheim
