Hi Guys,
Advice needed please.
My new Nationwide Debit Card has arrived in the UK.
What would be the safest way (If there is one!) for my son to send it to me here in the Phils?
BTW - Welcome to all new members (I keep forgetting - I suppose it's because I'm over 30 now.)

Simply send it fedex or whoever unactivated and activated If poss once there. Problem is the lack of autograph of mr alan on the back

Make sure Nationwide know you will be using it in the Philippines or else they will stop it from being used!!
You know, I thought my bank would have had issues as my wife has a card to the same account and sometimes withdraws on the same day as me but it's never been an issue. It is best to advise the bank though, I agree!

Good advise though i used my card for two years without them letting me know i was going traveling.... in 2 years i did not once use it in Europe... Never had a problem.
To be honest my spending habits are very strange as one day i bought a flight from a HongKong travel agent then on the same day i bought something in London while the next was in South Africa ....
i've had my rbs cc blocked a few times, when i bought b/d pressies online for the misses when she was in the phils, only to get an email from the supplier about a week later telling me the payment had been blocked
my barclay was blocked when some cheekyused it to purchase some small items in china
. barclays fraud dept told me they had blocked the card becuase of the items purchased were small value, meaning if they bought a 50" plasma they could have got away with it
your card could be blocked at random, especially as much CC fraud now takes place outside the uk becuase of chip n pin..
for about 2 years, when i used my RBS CC or switch card i would get a text from rbs saying it had just been used.. why don't they all do this and why have they stopped it

I met someone in Oz who had his barclays card blocked as he was working in Thailand and not used it in a year, went to use it in oz and got blocked. He had to phone the UK office to get it sorted and that took over 2 weeks all in all...
Maybe i am wrong but i think having to tell Nationwide you are about to use the card abroad is a new thing or maybe they have seen my account and are being careful...
Using two cards at the same time is fine on the same day if its Atm or you have a joint account.

i once had a random call from a cc company becaus ei used a card twice quickly in two places a mile or less apart. But they never called up when i used it in three countries in a short space of time go figure.
The time they stop it will be by the law of murphy ( A wise man indeed) the most annoying time possible will be sought by the CC company trust me.
Everytime I travel abroad, I make the point in phoning my service providers and notify them of where I will be going to and the dates.
And under no circumstances they will process any charges incurred after those dates.
Infact MBNA kindly informed me, not so long ago, that someone tried it on in Tenerife........ No success.
I must be more careful shopping online, tho.

I received my new nationwide debit card this week as well and a card reader. I already sent the card to the Philippines using the royal mail with Sign For. Although theres additional charges but its not a lot and its worth it.
I think its a good service, I usually used this whenever I sent important stuff abroad.
There is always death and taxes; however, death doesn't get worse every year.

Barclaycard are very good when it comes to security and a few times they stopped me from using it because they thought it was being used by someone else, i was impressed by them!

Went to Nationwide before I left - told them where I was going (Phils.) and for how long (A year) and could they send my new card out to me.

So, how do I get my new card 'cos my old one runs out whilst I am in the Phils?

So, I came over here in January with a card that would last me 6 months - up to now they have not blocked any of my ATM withdrawals - but I really felt that (Sorry about this but I used to interview teacher candidates who I would not have let loose on my pet bee - Eric - who had an accident (There's another Pythonism for you there Dom)) the spotty young kids in Nationwide would at least be able to look further than their computer screens and give a little 'HUMAN COMMON SENSE.'
Forgive me again - maybe this should be the 3rd time I have made a post that should be in 'Rant.'
Anyroadup - love and mushy peas for your advice - I shall go down the Fedex way I think. People speak highly of their service here in Dumaguete.
BTW - here in Valencia - a half litre bottle of San Miguel has now gone up to 30pesos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (37.5pence)

If you use someone like DHL you will be fine.. You want to see Nationwide's new Internet banking VPN fob... you cannot carry that around the world with you!

Sounds nearly as bad as NatWest. After reading the post here I phoned NatWest told them that my wife & I were going to the Philippines for a month and asked them to make sure our cards were not blocked. Response was "we WILL block your card anyway". Been told by them that this WILL happen and we'll have to phone UK to get cards unblocked.
The daft thing is i have used my natwest card there in the past and nothing been said
Best to get though to card security i spoke to one of the credit cards security departments who actually do the montioring they were far more helpful than the idiots in customer service.
Natwests local branch customer service over the phone gave me some very incorrect and potentially costly incorrect advice when a card of my was cloned. The investigation report after i made a serious complaint said they were not trained to deal with such matters reading between the lines. The fact they compenstated me for this mistake out of court seem to show that it was one hell of a mistake.

Don't forget that after you receive the card, you will need to phone in to activate it........
And I don't think you can phone UK based 0800 numbers from abroad....
But I may be wrong....

Just read this statement from the Nationwide website:

So is it correct to say that people do get charged?
why not let the bank send it off on your address in the uk, and let anyone in the family sign as your in behalf...by the time the card arrived at home in the uk...let your family member send it all way here in phils just through postmail(via registered mail) . its real cheap and quite safe as well...hubby sent one of his debit card in me through registered mail...packed it up inside.
I wondered the same myself after I read the same statement before going to Cebu at the end of April. But after using random ATM's in shopping malls and an ATM in HK airport on my way home, I checked online when I got back to the UK and found I hadn't been charged anything for the withdrawals.
I think for the most part you probably won't get charged and Nationwide are just covering themselves in case you do. The only way to really tell unfortunately I guess is if you're going to be using the same ATM's regularly, just use them once and wait until they appear online!
Been with NW for many years now... no charges though my friend once got charged more for taking the money out than the value of the money he took out...
We all know about the ATM's that say "fee of £1.50" so NW have to cover their own backs
