When asked for my ethnic backgound, I put Other - Cornish
What do I put for my daughter? Her mother was South African, her family has been there for generations. But she was Indian. Though she is not Indian, because she was South African. Neither was she Asian, as Africa is not in Asia (much to the surprise of some people).
So if I put she is white and South African, that will tell them nothing, as what is South African? They have 13 official languages.
I think in future I will put Other - human
It's all a load of bull, between the PC brigade and the target meeting box tickers, they have made a right mess of it.
The PC brigade say we must talk of a chalk-board, not a black-board. Why then are we allowed to speak of a white-board?
Many councils in the UK have a black workers forum, can you imagine the row if you had a white workers forum?
If people could just be left to get on with each other, and respect each other as people, not as a classification of person, things would be a lot better.
In the 1960s, Redd Foxx, a black American comedian summed it up. Two of his lines were:-
"I don't care what colour you are, come nuclear war, we'll all be black - - - and crisp"
"It doesn't matter what colour you are, when you get to bed and turn the light off, it becomes a question of who bathed"
Where we come from, and whatever our background doesn't matter, it is our attitudes towards all others that matters.
