    Bank holiday pay

My wife works as a carer, is she entitled on a double pay when she goes to work on bank holidays? There were 2 bank holidays last month and it seems she wasn't payed for that. There is supposed to be 14 hours extra pay.

double pay, what does it say in her contract of employment ?

i don't think there is a set figure for the pay you get working on a bank holiday, wether it's your usual hourly rate, 1 1/2 or double time. depends on your employer.

as for working bank holidays '
Although many workers are given time off work on bank and public holidays, your employer is not required by law to allow you time off work on these days. And if they do give you the time off, they do not have to pay you for this time off. However, your contract of employment may give you the right to time off work on bank and public holidays. If so, it will also specify whether this time off will be paid or not.'

Most places now pay normal time weekends, and bank holidays. It's a case of, you've got a job, be grateful, and that's the way it should be.

My wife worked at a care home for a while and it seems that most of them don't pay any premium for bank holidays and in my wife's case, not for Saturday or Sunday either. They usually have a rota system and they just include an extra day off in lieu within the rota to make up for the bank holiday.

Joe is correct, we used to own a care home, and unlike most employers, we paid our staff time+half on all bank holidays and double time on Xmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Easter Sunday, plus all weekend night staff got a shift premium. Elsa still works at the home, and these rates remain in force, 3 years after selling the business.
