I have been taking my driving lessons since Oct 07
I am getting more confident each day, but still I get panick when I have to stop on hills and roundabouts
My driving instructor told me that by next month if I heard it right, examiners would actually ask you to follow the road signs while you are taking your driving exam. He will ask you to take him to a place by following the road signs without him telling you where to turn etc.

Of course thats what it says allthough worded "live in the Uk on the website"
But if say the brit spouse had a friend in one of the postions mentioned and had met the non brit spouse in phill for example then they could sign for it.
That or had a non family member they now know here who they knew when they lived in Phil in person.
Not for everyone but worth bearing in mind as many people if they decide to take up lessons after two years here will need to find a person in one of the postions mentioned. As who meets people from day one they arrive in a country?
For example one of my Mates is in the postion where he met my wife years back before she entered the UK and is in a postion mentioned.
A brief meeting the first time but as the ruling stands they have known one another for about four years over two of them in the Uk
The Wife also knows of people who have moved to the UK years ago who knew her when she was younger in Phill. They dont socialise here but still know one another.
Some may have had Brit mates come out for the wedding etc.
But like you say make sure its true as otherwise they could ask to see a stamp they dont have in their passport, and all would be in hot water.
Lets be honest in the past many had doctors sign it who met you for a few mintues if that once.
When I applied for my provisional driving license 2 years ago, I remember my references was my bro in law who have known me for less than a year and my teacher in Esol who taught me for just a month. I think it doesn't matter of how long these references have known you as long as you have someone to put in your application that they can contact with.
Kimmi, goodluck to your driving lessons, it might be nerve wracking for the first time but who hasn't felt that? I think it's everybody else. Just be confident, listen to your instructor. You'll get use to it, easy peasy.

When I exchanged my licence for a UK one, I sent my passport with the application. I sent it special delivery, and enclosed a prepaid and addressed special delivery envelope for its return.
I got the passport back three days later, and my uk licence seven days later.

just to update this thread and to give some pointers to those filipina who also wanted or planning to apply for a driving license..
1. I searched for the DVLA website and asked them to sent me a D1 Pack ( it is for the Provisionary License - for first time application)
2. When they send u the necessary form, just fill it up and u also need ur passport and marriage license, and 1 passport size picture..and also the £50 fee u can pay thru cheque or postal order..
3. You can apply ur driver's license eventhough u haven't been here in the UK for 2 years.
4. If the picture in ur passport and the photo the u're going to submit is the same, then u dont need somebody to sign the back of ur photo..
5. And then in just one week u can have ur driver's license and get ready for ur driving lessons..

I don't think it's wise to scrimp on the driving lessons. If you have just one lesson a week, it takes up half the lesson just trying to get back into the flow of it and remembering what you've already been taught. My wife passed her theory test the second time around and is having 3 lessons a week. On the first theory test, she got full marks on the questions, but failed on the hazard perception.you mean your visa's for your misses didn't cost you £3000
err, in total i would have thought it cost about £1,700 for the tests and driving lessons,, half what i paid for visas a bargin
but the same amount of stress as the visa process
She also drives my car from time to time just for extra practise, but she says that the fact that I am nervous (no dual controls) makes her nervous. The lessons are booked and paid for in blocks of 10 for £200, but I think it can be much more expensive in the long run if you scrimp on the lessons and have just one a week resulting in multiple failed tests and many, many more lessons.
She is hoping to take her practical test sometime in late September and she says she is feeling quite confident that she will pass.

I think number 4 is worth bearin in mind so if you get a new passport to travel make sure you keep a few pictures spare.
Luckily the Wife could ask the local Phill shop owner to sign her photo.
As shop owners are on the list of those allowed to sign.
My Wife sent of her application the other day so london and scotland will soon each have a new learner driver and may I wish you Kimmi a safe and successful time learning as I hope for my Wife

I think its DVLA approved it also comes with a dvd of software with test questions.
My missus had the same thing on the computer and she spent hours practising with it, she still failed it the first time.

To be honest the Hazard perception part seems to be like a computer game all about timing a fraction to early or late and you muck up.
I think all those who approve of making the test harder should volunteer to retake the test every 20 or 30 years be intresting how many people give up driving rather than go though all that.
Maybe the quickest and most effective way of reducing congestion going

btw, hubby bought me the highway code book so I can start reading it but where can I get a DVD or a software for the hazard test??
Umm the Wife got hers from a Workmate so im not sure but it looks just like the same sort of branding as the Highway code.thanks Kuya Andy..and goodluck to ur wife also hope we can pass our theory test and practical test..

Hi Joe, How about if I have my International license but don't know much how to drive. Do I need to apply license here ? Can I use my international? How long? My Thai friend has Int'l and she just drive right away, but not sure if that will be OK.get an international license in the phils, it's pretty easy..
you need to apply for a student license first in the phils, after a month, you can apply for a non professional driving license, and take a theory test, eye test, wee test
then when you have your non pro license you can apply for a international license ..
i hope i got this right, but its worth doing, as you will be able to drive for a whole year, and will make taking your test easier here

when you first come to the uk, you can drive for upto a year on an international license, and you need to tell your car insurance company your driving on a international license.
you cannot use a international license after 1yr of when you first came to the uk, if your a resident of the uk, some people think you can go back to the phils or where ever and come back to the uk and drive for upto a year again, you cannot, you have to pass both your theory and practical test before you can drive again.
and driving on a int license after 1yr of first coming to the uk, could get you into serious trouble and its possible it could effect any visa apps you make eg FLR/ILR if you are taken to court and convicted of driving without a valid license and invalid insurance, and your car could be crushed
and if you've got a British passport, you cannot drive with a international license in the uk !
For those who wants to pass their theory test, I just passed mine 4 months ago for the first time, the theory was easy peasy as long you learn the highway code, the tricky one was the hazard perception, if you click too much you'll score 0, what I did was I left few seconds right after the hazard starts to show then started to press the button.
I scored 44 out of 75 for Hazard Perception and the passing score is 44 and
50 out of 50 for Theory.
