Where's Cheap Place to Live in UK?

I'm not sure if food here is cheaper than down south, but there are lots of 'low cost food stores' like Aldi, Lidl, Netto (I was really surprised with netto! haven't been there for years but they have lots of brand name food for far cheaper prices than the major supermarkets), petrol is cheaper here I believe we're paying 112.9/l minumum.

Houses are really resonable, you can get a 2 bed house for about 70k in most villages and towns.

The people are really friendly, I moved here from South Shields which is about 50 miles away ( a long way for some of the people in these small mining villages!) and the people are very friendly in the small village that I live in. Very accepting of people from outside the area, there is a very small Filipino community (about 4 people) in the actual village and the people that I know are very accepting of them. I only say that because in some of these small ex mining villages you might expect to find some bigotry, not just to people from overseas but 'outsiders'. A lot of the people were born and bred in the village.

We have excellent transport links via the A19 and A1(M), and if you wanted to get the train to London its direct from Durham station.

Plenty of hospitals around here, walk in centres popping up all over the place and these new 'super' health centres for employment for your wife, salaries for nurses are less up here because we don't get the London enhancement. But still plenty of work and agencies for her to look through.

This is pretty helpful enough information for me. I would consider this place much likely great place to live when it comes to accessibility and cheap place to live in. Since my wife is a nurse and we're considering of moving outside Central London, living in a country side is not a problem for us.

But i'll check other places more. thank you so much! really appreciated.

hi, yes your right, no place here in UK that is cheap....its very imposible to have..esp in business area in central london, im here in london and OMG, all is expensive....thats why my partner settle down here and buy his house 8n years ago and he let someone rent it 2 years before i arrived and lived in his other flat east london while working, ive heard in the news, less percent of the family here in london owned their own houses.....almost all is renting and almost all ages under 30's just renting coz its very expensive but dont worry because its very accesible here, some will just walk to work...

Cheap! I mean, when I'm live in Central London and rent a 2bedroom flat house, this will cost me 1000 to 1200 pounds/month, but when I go Surrey and rent the same flat model house, this will only cost me 600+ to 800+ pounds. Now, I believe Surrey is little bit cheaper place to live than in Central London. Is there any more place as such cheaper as Surrey?, since I don't prefer this place to start a family life.

I was curious about that place and I found out using the rac route planner that it takes 10 hours and 40 minutes drive from London City to that place no wonder why it is cheaper place.

We had a look at a really nice victorian 4 story house with all original ceiling roses coving and a huge iron cooking range that would of been worth well over a million in London.. The road and paths were really wide and at some time in the past it must have been quite a posh area.. They wanted 12 grand for it.
It was in Toxteth so we gave it a miss.
I think it was the alcoholic crack and glue sniffers outside the halal store that put her off.
I suppose it was enough that she already lives with one?

Hello , i grew up in Brighton , lived in London for many years but now live in Sheffield , South Yorkshire. Their is a huge difference between the cost of living in the South East and the more northern towns and cities , as others have said the cheaper places in the London area are often not very desirable although i enjoyed living all over London it is not everybodies choice!

Everywhere down south is exspensive to live. I use to rent a 3 bed house in Canarywharf for a ridiculos amount of wonga until I got made redundant.

I now live in the centre of Leeds in one of those city apartments over looking the city with a balcony and parking, which costs a lot,lot less than what you would pay in London for the equivalent spec. In leeds there is a big hospital as well as a training student hospital which employ thousands of nurses and doctors, so I would imagine there would be jobs for you here, but best check before taking the plunge.

Interms of food we have the usual big superstores like asda, sainsburys, tesco, morrison, m&s, co-op. We have cheapo ones too like aldi and netto. Then there are specialist stores like the chinese supermarkets and various middle eastern stores. There is a big student population here because of the university and there is a real mix of people just like London, so quite often there are discount nights out at various different places. Plus we have leeds festival and other big events.

Houses here start from around 50k onwards for a mid terrace house, ok, ok so it might not be in the best of areas but you gotta start somewhere right. For a fairly decent house there are hundreds of houses for sale that are around the 110k that would get you a 3 bed semi with driveway and garden. In terms of renting, you can rent a house for as little as 400 pounds here or you could rent a 1 bed flat for around 350 pounds. Having a large student population helps keep accomadation prices low.

Leeds also has an airport which is handy. Manchester is an hours drive away. And you can get a fast train down to London in 2-3 hours.

From my limited experince isn't it more expensive living in quieter areas as many shops have less competion and therefore charge what they like? While in many cities residential areas due to competion prices in shops are far lower. Plus many of us londoners rarely need a car or even public transport as many things a short walk away, saving us loads.

Ive been tracking house prices in the UK and notice they are becoming cheaper almost every day..
When the bubble really pops the UK will seem like any other 3rd world country..A bit like it was in the 70`s..(or anytime since in Liverpool)

A mate picked up a 10 year old or so old 5 bedroom all with en suite properly luxury gaff. With indoor swiming pool huge garden designer kitchen blah blah. for just over 200k was reckoned to be over 1.2 mill two years back to the south sea bubblists Needed some work but that was pennies for what he was getting.

Hi Peep`s... I think it all depends on where your job is...,Which is the advantage of renting.You can up root and move to where ever you get another job as when you own a house it is that much harder... Where as for me I am well rooted here in the West Country (135 miles from Heathrow) and happy with a non rented front door of my own.

Some Philippine people I know about four of them share / rent a house together which keeps things cheaper but it all depends if you like to share.... Phil..
