The Beatles.
No other band in the WORLD has ever come within a million miles of them.
Rolling Stones were my other favourite.
Won't bore everyone with a big list of the others. :)

Have to disagree about the beatles imo the stones were far better musicians.

After the Beatles, its gotta be Led Zeppelin, first saw them in a small club in Southall circa '68 and Jimmy used the violin bow and that was before they hit the big time here.Cost to get in 8 shillings and 6 pence and it was the best gig I ever went to, sheer magic and I went to see plenty of bands in those good old days. Pink Floyd also deserve a mention together with Rod Stewart and the Faces.:hubbahubba:

:olddude: ... I'm one of the few old codgers on here, whose late teens and early twenties were dominated by Merseyside Bands such as the Beatles, Searchers, Gerry & the Pacemakers - to name but three. Okay, I didn't allude to the Rolling Stones ... but they were formed in London. And then - heading back North - there was Freddie & the Dreamers from Manchester who, in my opinion, are worthy of mention: I fondly recall  my late first wife frequently engaging in a take~off of Freddie's dancing antics :REDancedancer08: in her pre~arthritic days.
But beyond the 1960s pop era ... my musical recollections become hazy ... :anerikke: ... either I'd outgrown this phase, the "talent" had seemed to steadily decline (in MY opinion) or I was simply no longer interested. ;)
So, it would be pointless of me to comment further.

ABC certainly were but OMD especially were more electro who loosly modelled themselves on Kraftwerk - they went more poppy in the later years but the first 4 albums were modern masterpieces especially architecture and morality their 3rd

UB40 moved away from roots reggae around the mid 80's after forming in '79. They started to bring out covers such as Red, Red Wine and IMO went downhill, although it was still good but nowhere as brilliant as before.
I think the only tracks that made the charts from that early period was King, Food For Thought & One in Ten and they weren't even the best.
I won't list them all, but here's a track called Madam Medusa about a bitch called Thatcher :icon_lol:. Over twelve minutes of pure quality roots reggae.

I went to see Queen in Woverhampton in about 1977. I got arrested that night. Long story! :D (Very minor offence)
At the time I was an avid Queen fan and particularly liked their earlier stuff, but they were a dissapointment live. Freddy couldn't hit the higher notes in Bohemian Rhapsody.
One of the best bands I saw live in that era was The Rod Stewart Band ( At least that was what it was called on the day). Excellent live.

I quite like Paul Weller but cant really say he is in the same league as the Beatles. I suppose it helps if one has lived through the various eras but I cant think of another UK band that had as much impact on the UK peoples every day lives as the Beatles, not before or since. Turn around for 5 minutes and there was another hit released - I distinctly remember that.
"During the week of 4 April 1964, The Beatles held twelve positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions. Neither feat has been matched by any other artist to date."
I quote from a website I have just googled....
"No rock ‘n roll group had more influence on a generation and the world as did The Beatles. They single handedly changed the period known as the ‘Sixties’ and their influence is still being felt today. Music, culture, lifestyles, hairstyles, clothing styles and attitudes all changed because of this remarkable band that emerged out of Liverpool England in the early 1960s."
In a time when there isnt so much to be proud about, the Beatles make me proud to be British, along with Alf Garnett :D (Just jestin about Alf)
Having said that I prefer the music of the Who.
What do Elton John, Rod Stewart and the Who got in common? They each did a great version of Pinball Wizard. I saw Rod Stewart and Elton John each perform it seperately live. I never saw the Who live, though saw Quadrophenia when it first came out.

His career includes:-
Squeeze
Solo Career
The Jools Holland Big Band
The Rhythm And Blues Orchestra
TV music shows such as The Tube, Later... with Jools Holland and his annual New Year pary
As an accomplished musician, song-writer, music producer and TV host he has worked with and influenced a huge number and variety of 'the musical greats'.

Not my link, that was posted by Les.
But I thought it was a good link.
Just like a few others before them 'The Beatles' influenced music and popular culture hugely.
It really depends how you define 'Top ever bands', it's subjective and we all have different ideas. On a solely objective level the Beatles are clearly up there at the 'top' in so many areas, there can be no argument about that, based on the facts.

If you are up in the North West then how about a visit to the Beatles museum. Well worth a visit. You could easily spend a whole day there including the other satellite sites. My wife enjoyed it and although she wasnt really fully aware of the Beatles, she was familiar with many of their songs and didnt realise their origin.
If you aren't from the era you can begin to appreciate the scale of their impact when going around the "caverns".

Its very popular, by the way. We had to queue to get in.

Did you know The Beatles went to Philippines.
The Manila concert was the last leg in the fab four's two-week tour of Germany and Japan. On July 3, 1966, The Beatles landed on Philippine soil for the first and last time. This two-night stopover in Manila proved disastrous from arrival to departure. Upon landing, The Beatles were immediately whisked to a pier and put on Marina, a yacht owned by Don Manolo Elizalde, two miles from the port. This arrangement completely cut The Beatles from their associates for at least two hours— the first time it ever happened.
On July 4, The Beatles held two soldout concerts at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium with a combined attendance of 80,000; the evening concert registered 50,000 paying audience, being rivaled only in size by the concert The Beatles gave at Shea Stadium in New York on August 15, 1965. Such record-making statistic though was supplanted by the succeeding events owing to a fiasco that happened earlier in the day.
It's quite a famous story and involving Imelda Marcos

Always had very broad taste in music. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61uFQ7MD1Q4&feature=relatedThat's their best album, Handsworth Revolution. Just like a lot of other reggae bands such as Third World, their best work came out in the late 70's and early 80's. By the time the 90's came, they had resorted to the cheesy stuff and just the odd decent track, which was disappointing.

Best UK bands for me
Punk: Sex Pistols, Damned , Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Crass
R&B/Blues Dr Feelgood, Alexis Korner, Nine Below Zero
Unclassifiable: Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry (so many different styles of song) and best of all Deaf School. If you haven't heard of them here's a quote from wikipedia
"author and founder of Mojo, Paul Du Noyer, went further: "In the whole history of Liverpool music two bands matter most, one is The Beatles and the other is Deaf School. If that seems like a sweeping statement then consider this: after the pop revolution of the 1960s led by The Beatles and other Merseyside groups, it looked as if the city's music scene had dried up forever. But in 1975 there came a motley band of Liverpool art students called Deaf School".
It is so true. Saw them many times as well as so many other great (and not so great) bands in erics club in Liverpool in the late 70s early 80s. Bands like OMD, Teardrop Expoldes, Big in Japan, Echo and the Bunnymen, Wah, all Liverpool based.

Don't think they were ever on OGWt but were on Supersonic in 1977! They split up in 1978, but reforemd in 1988 for 6 concerts. Since 2006 they have done a few more including a mini tour last year culminating in 2 gigs in Tokyo. Didn't manage to get to those but did manage to see them 10 times over the course of the year, from London to Birmingham, Chester, Manchester and of course Liverpool.
Had some good guest singers and guitarists at times including Kevin Rowland (Dexys Midnight Runners), Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds), and Suggs (Madness), know to Deaf School fans as Mr Bright as he is married to one of the singers Bette Bright. If you get the chance to see them I would reccommend it, you won't be disappointed.
