Can there be a more serious subject - except for one on the bacon butty perhaps!

Inspired by a seminar I was coerced into attending last week on healthy eating, where the speaker raved about the properties of the oat (must be organic, stone milled and marketed by an obscure co-operative, and of course cost a fortune for a bag!), how do you make your porridge.

One Scottish guy gruffly told me it has to be water and salt only (and anything else I'd be called a wee poof)

Another lady said her and her husband spend the summer collecting wild berries, freezing them, so all winter they can put them into the morning porridge (of course they would be a bit slushy after defrosting, but still very fit for this purpose).
She used half water half milk, no salt.

My friend at work just boils it up in water and eats it that way - well that sounds like something I'd only use for sticking up wallpaper!

So never mind how do you eat your creme egg - what is the "proper" way to make this most healthy of breakfasts

Oh, and for all it's worth, if I don't just skip breakfast, I cook in a pan on the stove, 2 cups water to one cup oats, pinch of salt, then when it's ready, add some milk to cool it.

Drop of honey and you're well away :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Then don't forget to sandblast the pan. I stopped using the microwave after the last time - when.................well I'd have been proud of that pebbledashing if it had been the outside of my house

Pretty similar to me except I use honey instead of syrup and add sliced banana. Am tucking into a bowl right now.....yum.

No added salt or sugar.

Incidentally, as Doc Alan might tell you, Scotland tends to be the highest in the country for heart related diseases and no doubt one of the reasons is salt in porridge. The daily recommended maximum of 1 teaspoonful of salt per day can be surpassed in your first meal of the day if you add salt to porridge.

in the philippines we do have our own porridge made of RICE (as usual):D.....its far much longer to cook it compare to your oat porridge.... but its plain and simple,.. rice, water and a bit of salt boil it till the rice is soft to your taste and then the breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner is ready....:)

 ... I suppose the same could be said about the quantity of salt added to the water used in boiling potatoes.

The Fatherlands best - Aldi Hi Spec Porridge £0.75p a kilo.

In bowl with milk & sugar (ideally let it stand to soak in for 10 mins or so) - 2 mins full blast in microwave, stir, 2 mins 50% power

As Terpe would say, its all about minimising risk. Especially at my age.

But how can you have fish and chips without salt, I ask.....:D
