NOT really such a silly question, Jonny ... being aware of some of the stupid rules that exist nowadays ...! I'm sure it would be okay to remove the staple. But then again, you never know ...

In the Phils it is attached to the new one, that is the continuation but, in the UK they chop the corner off of the old passport so it is invalid.
I guess you may leave it as it is...
