    I don't know what quals or skills you both have, but if once here, one of you could apply for tier 1, you could get ILR after 5yrs, but if not it could be a struggle, one other way would be 10yrs legal stay in the uk (combination of time spent on other visas).

    but immigration rules are changing, and it can only get more difficult for non Europeans to come here .

    I thought the 10 year rule was one of the things being stopped, so no student coming here now will be able to get permanent residency unless they are are able to switch to work visa.

    not yet, but the ‘7 year child concession’ went in dec 2008

    I thought the rule was being removed in July 2011, which means that anyone arriving here since August 2001 wouldn't be able to apply under the 10 year rule.
