Looks like you'll manually have to trash the registry.
MySQL stopped working when my m/b crashed and I couldn't get it to reinstall kept getting an error. So I installed W7 on a fresh drive... and still got the same error... It's not the installer that works fine on my other systems
... and the exact niggles I had on Vista are on W7 ... hence I said all along it's just Vista with the front bit changed.
